When my mother visited in September 2024 with my father (72, with a knee replacement) and my niece (then 7), I learned more about running family trips in Kashmir in seven days than in five years of running them for other people. The slow stops. The toilet planning. The ear-pop on the Gondola. The 4 PM tea that becomes a hill. This itinerary has been rewritten three times since that trip. It now works for families with kids as young as 3, and grandparents into their late 70s.

Why families choose us: slow-paced, no-surprise itinerary

The single biggest mistake other operators make is cramming Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam–Sonamarg into 4 days. With kids and seniors, that pace breaks somebody by Day 3. Our base family itinerary is 6 days, 5 nights, with two full nights in Srinagar (so jet-lag and altitude settle), and Sonamarg as a day trip instead of an overnight (the Sonamarg road tires older parents).

Day-by-day 6D/5N family itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar, slow Dal Lake shikara

Pickup at SXR in an Innova Crysta with two cold-water bottles and a small fruit basket — the airport prepaid kiosks don’t do that. Check into a Deluxe houseboat on Nigeen Lake (calmer than the main Dal — better for kids who want to dangle their feet off the deck). A slow afternoon: 90-minute shikara ride with biscuit-feeding the ducks, then early dinner of mild rogan josh and steamed rice. Lights out by 9 PM — most families are tired from the flight.

Day 2 — Mughal Gardens + Tulip Garden (if season)

Late breakfast on the houseboat. Drive to Shalimar Bagh (the running fountains are a kid favourite) and Nishat Bagh terraces. Lunch at Ahdoo’s on Residency Road — they do a children’s vegetarian thali. Afternoon at the Tulip Garden between April 1 and April 22, or at the Botanical Garden the rest of the year. Optional ATV rides for kids 8+. Dinner on the houseboat.

Day 3 — Gulmarg (Gondola Phase I, snow play, ATV)

2-hour drive to Gulmarg. Phase I gondola to Kongdoori (2,650 m) — safe for everyone. Phase II to Apharwat (3,979 m) only for adults and kids 10+; we keep the grandparents at Kongdoori with a Kashmiri pheran and a flask of Kahwa. 90 minutes of snow play near the gondola base (in winter), or pony rides in summer. Check into Hotel Khyber or Vintage Gulmarg (both have ground-floor family rooms — book ahead). Dinner: in-hotel.

Day 4 — Drive to Pahalgam via saffron fields

4-hour drive Gulmarg → Pahalgam. Lunch stop at Avantipora (1,200-year-old temple ruins — short, kid-friendly walk). October-only: 20 minutes in the purple saffron fields of Pampore. Check into Chinar Resort, Pahalgam — Lidder River-facing cottages with ground-floor entry. Evening: gentle walk along the Lidder boardwalk.

Day 5 — Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari with private cab

11 km up to Aru Valley — meadow walks, soft pony rides (we use our own pony handler Tariq; ₹400 per child for a 30-min loop). Lunch back in Pahalgam. Afternoon at Betaab Valley (cottage from the 1983 film still standing) and Chandanwari (snow patches until July). Back to the hotel by 6 PM. Family dinner with a small Kashmiri trout option for the parents.

Day 6 — Sonamarg day trip, return, departure

Early start back to Srinagar via the Pahalgam–Anantnag–Srinagar–Ganderbal–Sonamarg corridor (5 hours net drive but spread over the day). Pony or shared-cab to the Thajiwas Glacier viewpoint (35 minutes from Sonamarg town). Back to Srinagar Airport by evening flight. If your flight is the next morning, we add an extra night at a Boulevard hotel.

Senior-friendly modifications (free)

If a grandparent is over 65 or has a heart/BP/knee condition, we make three quiet changes: skip Gulmarg Gondola Phase II (altitude can stress hearts), replace the Aru pony with a slow Innova drive 8 km up the asphalt road, and shift the Sonamarg day to a Doodhpathri day (lower altitude, gentler driving). The package price stays the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kashmir safe for kids and senior citizens in 2026?

Yes. 2.36 crore tourists came to J&K in 2024 and roughly a third travelled as families. The four main tourist towns — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — have dedicated Tourist Police posts. We’ve run 1,200+ family trips without a single safety incident in 10 years.

Are child seats and high-chairs available?

ISOFIX child seats in cabs: yes, on 48-hour notice (₹200/day). Hotel high-chairs: yes at Khyber, Vivanta, Chinar Resort, Lalit Grand Palace. Houseboat high-chairs: limited, we bring a folding one if you ask.

Will my parents (65+) be okay at Gulmarg’s altitude (2,650 m)?

Gulmarg town (2,650 m / 8,700 ft) is fine for most healthy seniors. Phase II Gondola (3,979 m / 13,054 ft) — skip if there’s any heart, BP or COPD history. We carry oxygen support on request.

Do you arrange pure-veg or Jain meals?

Yes. Pure-veg at every hotel and houseboat (Kashmiri-veg is a real cuisine — nadru, dum aloo, haakh, dahi-baingan, kashmiri pulao). Strict Jain (no onion, no garlic, no root vegetables) needs 72-hour notice — we bring a specialist cook at no extra charge.

Can we get a doctor on call if a child falls sick?

Yes, in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. ₹600 hotel/houseboat visit fee, paid to the doctor directly. Pharmacies are open till 10 PM in Srinagar; in Pahalgam and Gulmarg till 8 PM. Pediatric medication is widely available.

Are the Gulmarg Gondola and Aru Valley ponies safe for 8-year-olds?

Gondola: yes, both phases are safe for any age. Ponies at Aru: yes, with our handler. Avoid the unbranded freelancer ponies near tourist spots — they sometimes overcharge or push timing. Tariq, our family-trip pony handler, has done this for 19 years and never had an incident.

Is school-vacation timing (May–June) more expensive than off-season?

Yes — May–June peak rates are 25–35% higher than September. Best family-rate window: 1 September to 15 October. Same weather, lower hotel rates, fewer crowds at Gulmarg.

What’s a realistic family budget for 5 nights (2 adults + 2 kids)?

₹81,000 all-inclusive for 6 days at standard 4-star level (excluding flights). See the table above. Budget version (3-star + Dzire) brings it to ₹54,000.
