Ten days in Kashmir gives you the space to breathe. Most tourists rush through in 5–7 days and miss half the valley. With 10 days you cover Srinagar’s lakes, Gulmarg’s snow, Pahalgam’s pine forests, Sonamarg’s glacier, and still have a full day for an offbeat detour — without constant packing and rushing. This is our recommended 10-day route, built from years of running local tours out of Srinagar.

Day 1–2: Srinagar — Arrival & City Exploration

Land at Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR). Your hotel or houseboat should be on or near Dal Lake. Day 1 afternoon: take a 1-hour shikara ride across Dal Lake — you’ll pass floating vegetable markets and willow canopies. Visit Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh (Mughal Gardens) in the golden evening light. Day 2: explore Old Srinagar — the wooden shrine of Shah-e-Hamdan, the grand Jamia Masjid, and the spice lanes of Maharaj Gunj bazaar. End the evening on your houseboat deck with a cup of kahwa.

Day 3–4: Gulmarg — Gondola & Snow

Gulmarg is 50 km from Srinagar (2-hour drive via Tangmarg). It sits at 2,650m and the Gondola — Asia’s highest cable car — lifts you to 3,980m (Phase 1, Kongdori) and 4,267m (Phase 2, Apharwat Peak). Book Gondola tickets in advance: Phase 1 costs ₹900 and Phase 2 costs ₹750 per person. Day 4: trek to Alpather Lake (frozen even in summer, 4 km from Phase 2 top station) and catch sunrise over Khilanmarg meadow at 3,080m. Stay overnight in Gulmarg — you’ll have it nearly to yourself after day-trippers leave.

Day 5–7: Pahalgam — Valleys & Pine Forests

Pahalgam sits at 2,130m, 95 km from Srinagar (3-hour drive through saffron fields). It’s the most relaxed stop on this itinerary. Day 5: drive option via Yusmarg adds a meadow detour. Day 6: Betaab Valley (15 km from Pahalgam, named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot there) and Chandanwari (16 km, starting point of Amarnath Yatra) are both reachable by shared jeep. Day 7: Baisaran meadow (5 km by pony, no cars allowed) — the alpine meadow ringed by fir trees earns its “mini Switzerland” nickname. Budget ₹500–700 for the pony ride up.

Day 8: Sonamarg — Glacier Day

Sonamarg (“Meadow of Gold”) is 80 km from Srinagar, roughly 2.5 hours. The main attraction is Thajiwas Glacier, reachable by pony (₹600–900 return) or a 3 km uphill walk. The glacier is accessible June–September and sits at around 3,000m. On the drive, stop at Gagangir village for a riverside tea break. If you’re planning a Leh road trip on a longer future visit, Sonamarg is the last Kashmir checkpoint before the Zojila Pass into Ladakh.

Day 9: Offbeat — Doodhpathri

Most tourists on quick 5–7 day trips never reach Doodhpathri (2,730m, 42 km from Srinagar via Budgam). The name means “Valley of Milk” — the streams run milky white over limestone. It’s a full-day local trip that most guides won’t take you on unless you ask specifically. Cab from Srinagar costs ₹3,000–3,500 for the round trip. Yusmarg (47 km southwest, 2,400m) is a valid alternative — quieter and popular with families, best in May–June when wildflowers carpet the meadows.

Best Time for This 10-Day Itinerary

April–June: All roads open, weather 15–25°C, Gulmarg still has snow. Peak season — book cabs and hotels 4–6 weeks ahead. July–August: Occasional rain showers but valleys are brilliantly green. Pahalgam is crowded during Amarnath Yatra (July). September–October: Our favourite — clear blue skies, autumn colours in Pahalgam, and 20–30% fewer tourists. December–March: Sonamarg road is closed; Gulmarg becomes a ski resort (some of Asia’s best skiing). Srinagar gets snow in January.

Practical Tips for 10 Days in Kashmir

Always book your Gulmarg Gondola tickets online 2–3 days in advance — queues can be 2–3 hours otherwise. Carry cash for ponies, shikaras, and smaller restaurants. Mobile data (Jio, Airtel) works well in Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. At Sonamarg, connectivity drops. Carry a light jacket even in July — evenings above 2,500m drop to 8–12°C. Your cab driver doubles as a local guide — ask them about their personal recommendations for restaurants and hidden viewpoints.
