Seven days in Kashmir is not too long and not too short. It gives you enough time to see everything that matters, absorb the pace of the Valley, and still leave with the feeling that you want to return. After running Kashmir trips for a decade, this is the itinerary we recommend without hesitation to first-time visitors who have a full week to spare.
Why 7 Days Is the Gold Standard for Kashmir
A 3–4 day trip covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. A 7-day trip does that and adds Sonamarg, one off-beat day destination, a full morning in the Old City, and enough breathing room that you are not watching the clock the entire time. Guests who do 7 days consistently rate their trips higher than guests who do 4 days — because they actually had time to sit by the Lidder River or take a second Shikara ride at dawn without it feeling like a sacrifice.
The Complete 7 Days Kashmir Itinerary 2026
Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar · Shikara Ride · Houseboat
Arrive at SXR airport. Check in to your houseboat on Dal Lake — we recommend the Boulevard-side stretch between Nehru Park and Nagin Lake for quieter water. Afternoon Shikara ride (₹500–800/hour on private Shikara, avoid the ₹100 shared ones that stop at every craft shop). Dinner on the houseboat veranda. First night on the water is something most guests remember for years.
Day 2 — Mughal Gardens · Old City Deep Dive
This day is Srinagar’s history and gardens. Start at Shalimar Bagh at 8 AM when it opens — arrive before the groups. Then Nishat Bagh (the largest Mughal garden, terraced up the hillside with Zabarwan mountains behind). Afternoon: the Old City. Shah Hamdan Shrine (Khanqah-e-Moula) on the Jhelum riverbank, then Jama Masjid — the mosque with 378 wooden pillars each cut from a single deodar trunk. End with an hour in Jamia Bazaar for Kashmiri saffron, dry fruits, and walnut wood work.
Day 3 — Gulmarg: Gondola to Apharwat & the Meadow
Leave by 7:30 AM. We pre-book Phase 2 Gondola tickets for this day. Gulmarg at 2,650m is 56 km from Srinagar. Apharwat summit at 4,267m is where the serious snow is — even in summer. Ski runs operate December to March. Back in the meadow by 2 PM: lunch at one of the restaurants near the gondola base, then walk to St. Mary’s Church (1895) and the golf course — one of the world’s highest. Return to Srinagar or overnight in Gulmarg if budget allows.
Day 4 — Pahalgam: Betaab Valley · Aru · Chandanwari
Full day in Pahalgam (96 km southeast). This is the Amarnath Yatra base camp and one of the most verdant valleys in India. Betaab Valley first, then Aru Village (the starting point for Great Lakes Trek). If time permits, push to Chandanwari (16 km from Pahalgam town) — where the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage begins each July-August. Lunch in Pahalgam town, back by 7 PM.
Day 5 — Sonamarg: Thajwas Glacier & Zero Point
Sonamarg (87 km northeast, 2.5 hours) literally means Meadow of Gold. The Thajwas Glacier is 3 km from the main town — ponies available for ₹400 return or walk it in 40 minutes. Zero Point (road open June to October) is worth the extra drive if Zoji La is clear. Sonamarg sits on the Srinagar–Leh highway — standing here and looking towards the pass gives you a visceral feel for the scale of this landscape even if you are not driving through.
Day 6 — Off-Beat Day: Doodhpathri or Yusmarg
This is the day most operators skip — and the one our guests consistently mention in reviews. Doodhpathri (42 km west of Srinagar) is a high-altitude meadow at 2,730m, translated as Valley of Milk for its white-water streams. Fewer than 50 foreign tourists visit per day even in peak season. Yusmarg (47 km southwest) has the Doodhganga River and pine forest pony rides. Either takes half a day — combine with a village lunch and return to Dal Lake for a final evening.
Day 7 — Last Morning · Shopping · Departure
Final morning: Lal Chowk for dry fruits and spices, Polo View Market for carpets and Pashmina, or the Craft Emporium on Residency Road for government-certified products at fixed prices. Transfer to SXR — exactly 14 km from Lal Chowk, allow 45 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the 7-day itinerary be done in 6 nights instead?
Yes — 6 nights and 7 days is effectively the same thing. Some guests arriving on an early morning flight count Day 1 as a full day; others arriving late count it as a half day. We build flexibility into every plan.
Should I overnight in Pahalgam or Gulmarg instead of returning to Srinagar?
Overnighting in Pahalgam on Day 4 is genuinely recommended — the valley is completely different at dusk and dawn when day-trippers have left. It adds ₹2,500–4,500 per night but improves the experience significantly. Gulmarg overnight is best in winter for the ski atmosphere.
Is Sonamarg worth a full day or just a half day?
Full day, especially if going to Zero Point. The drive alone — through the Sind River valley and the dramatic narrowing before Gagangir — is worth two hours of your time. Half-day trips to Sonamarg feel rushed and guests consistently say they wished they had more time there.
