A Jammu & Kashmir tour package combines the best of both regions: the pilgrimage at Vaishno Devi Shrine in the Trikuta Hills of Jammu, the mountain resort of Patnitop, and then the full Kashmir valley experience — Dal Lake, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. Most J&K packages run 8–10 nights. Starting from Jammu by train or flight, you travel north into the valley, and fly home from Srinagar.

How to Reach Jammu

By train: Jammu Tawi (JAT) station is the preferred gateway — the Rajdhani Express from Delhi reaches Jammu in 8–10 hours overnight. This is the most cost-effective option: Delhi–Jammu sleeper fare ₹500–₹2,000; AC 3-tier ₹1,500–₹3,500. From Jammu Tawi station, Katra (for Vaishno Devi) is 50 km (1.5 hours). By flight: Jammu Airport (IXJ) has daily IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet connections from Delhi, Mumbai, and other metros. Delhi–Jammu flights: ₹3,000–₹8,000 one way. Drive-in: Delhi to Jammu is 570 km (10–12 hours via NH-44). Many families from Punjab and Haryana prefer this option for road trip flexibility.

Vaishno Devi Trek — What to Expect

The Vaishno Devi Shrine (1,584m) is one of India’s most-visited pilgrimage sites — approximately 8 million pilgrims annually. The trek from Katra is 14 km one way (28 km round trip) via the traditional route passing Banganga, Ardh Kuwari (6 km), and the Shrine cave. Trekking time: 4–5 hours up, 3–4 hours down. Helicopter service from Katra to Sanjichhat (cutting trek to 2.5 km from shrine) costs ₹1,200–₹1,800 one way — bookable at the Shrine Board counter or online. Ponies and palanquins are available at fixed rates. Prasad and darshan are free; shrine registration (at Katra) is mandatory and free. Best time for Vaishno Devi: October–March (cooler weather, manageable crowds vs July–August peak).

Best Time for a Jammu & Kashmir Package

The J&K combination works well year-round but has two distinct peak windows. March–June: Kashmir is green and flowery, Vaishno Devi is manageable before the July–August peak pilgrimage rush. Patnitop has residual snow in March–April. September–November: Kashmir in autumn is spectacular; Vaishno Devi crowds thin after Navratri. Weather is cool throughout J&K. Avoid July–August if possible: the Amarnath Yatra (Pahalgam route) causes heavy traffic in the Kashmir valley, and Vaishno Devi sees its annual peak crowds during Navratri. If Vaishno Devi is the primary purpose and Kashmir is secondary, October–March is the best Jammu window.
