Vaishno Devi + Kashmir Package: Combined Pilgrimage & Valley Tour (2026 Guide)
Vaishno Devi and Kashmir are natural travel companions — the shrine is 165 km from Srinagar, and thousands of pilgrims combine the yatra with a Kashmir valley tour every year. Done well, this is one of the most satisfying trips in northern India: spiritual significance, dramatic mountain landscapes, houseboat experiences, and meadow sightseeing in a single itinerary. Done poorly — rushed, poorly sequenced, with wrong accommodation — it is exhausting. This guide covers how to do it properly.
How the Combination Works Geographically
Vaishno Devi Shrine is located in the Trikuta Hills near Katra, Reasi district, Jammu — approximately 50 km from Jammu city and 165 km from Srinagar. The two destinations connect via the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), which passes through Udhampur, Ramban, Banihal, and Qazigund before descending into the Kashmir valley. The standard logistics for the combined trip: fly into Jammu (IXJ), complete the Vaishno Devi yatra (1–2 nights in Katra), then road-transfer to Srinagar (5–6 hours, 165 km) to begin the Kashmir tour. Return by flight from Srinagar (SXR) to home city. This keeps the trip linear — no backtracking, no repeated drives.
The Vaishno Devi Yatra — Practical Details
The Vaishno Devi Shrine at 5,200 ft is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India — 8–10 million visitors annually. The trek from Katra base camp to the shrine and back is 14–16 km round trip (traditional route via Adhkuwari) or 12 km via the helicopter route combined with shorter walk. Yatra registration is mandatory — all pilgrims must register at the Yatra Registration Counter (YRC) in Katra or online via the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website (maavaishnodevi.org). Registration is free and assigns a time slot to manage crowd flow. Helicopter service (Katra–Sanjichhat, ₹1,050–₹1,200 per person one way) is available and eliminates the uphill section of the climb — the remaining walk from Sanjichhat to the shrine is 2.5 km. For older pilgrims or those with mobility limitations, ponies (₹600–₹800 one way) and palkis (palanquin, ₹1,500–₹2,500) are available from Katra to the shrine.
Time required: Allow one full day for the yatra at minimum — arrive Katra Day 1 afternoon, complete trek Day 2 (early morning start recommended to beat crowds, 04:00–05:00 departure from Katra), return Katra by early afternoon. If using helicopter: Day 2 can be completed in half a day, allowing afternoon departure to Srinagar. Accommodation in Katra: Hotel Vaishno Palace, Hotel Snow Park, and Hotel Sai Residency are consistently well-regarded mid-range options (₹1,500–₹3,500/night). The Shrine Board also operates a dharamshala complex for budget pilgrims. We pre-book all Katra accommodation for our combined-package guests — space fills quickly around Navratri (October) and major Hindu festivals.

Best Time for the Combined Trip
March–June and September–November are the best windows. The Vaishno Devi trek is open year-round (the shrine never closes), but the Kashmir valley portion is best avoided in January–February (heavy snow can disrupt Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam roads). October is particularly popular — Navratri brings heavy pilgrimage traffic to Katra (book 8+ weeks ahead for Navratri dates), but the Kashmir valley is at its most beautiful with golden chinar trees. December is viable for this combination if you specifically want snow in Kashmir and are comfortable with potential road disruptions — we offer a Vaishno Devi + snow Kashmir winter package. Avoid July–August for Katra specifically (monsoon makes the trek muddy and slippery; the shrine is still open but conditions are challenging).
Permits and Logistics Notes
The Katra–Srinagar road transfer (NH-44) is our preferred logistics for this combination. The drive passes through some dramatic gorge scenery (Ramban, Banihal) and the Banihal Tunnel shortens the route significantly versus the old mountain pass alignment. Drive time varies 5–7 hours depending on traffic — Friday and Sunday afternoons are heaviest. We time departures to avoid peak traffic. A Vaishno Devi yatra registration confirmation slip must be carried during the trek — our team ensures all guests have this organised before they arrive in Katra. No special permits are required for Srinagar or the standard Kashmir circuit (Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg); permits are only required if adding Gurez or Ladakh extensions.
We manage the full logistics: yatra registration, Katra accommodation, road transfer, houseboat placement, and Kashmir circuit. Our team has done this route hundreds of times. One call and it is all handled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we do Vaishno Devi and Kashmir in 6 nights?
Yes — a tighter version: 1 night Katra + yatra Day 2 + 4 nights Kashmir (Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam, no Sonamarg). This works best if using the helicopter option for the yatra (saves half a day). We do not recommend compressing below 6 nights for the combination as it makes both the yatra and the Kashmir portion feel rushed.
Is the Katra to Srinagar road safe?
Yes. NH-44 is a National Highway and the main artery connecting Jammu and Kashmir — it is maintained, policed, and our drivers drive it regularly. Occasional weather disruptions (fog in winter, landslides in heavy monsoon) can cause delays. We monitor road conditions on travel day and advise guests if any adjustment to departure timing is needed.
Are there direct flights from my city to Jammu?
Jammu (IXJ) has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet operate the route. Delhi–Jammu is 1 hour 10 min. If your city does not have a direct Jammu connection, Delhi is the most convenient hub with 6–8 daily Jammu departures. We advise on optimal routing for your departure city when we prepare your quote.
