Kashmir’s tourist destinations span everything from high-altitude glacial meadows to Mughal-era gardens to some of India’s most photographed lakes. This guide covers the places that actually deliver β what makes each one worth visiting, who it suits, and what to know before you go.
1. Dal Lake & Srinagar β The Essential Kashmir Experience
Dal Lake is the centrepiece of Srinagar. Staying on a houseboat β a wood-panelled floating hotel with a Shikara water-taxi β is one of India’s classic travel experiences. The lake itself is a working ecosystem: floating vegetable gardens, lotus beds, fish farms, and a floating market that starts at 5 AM. Beyond the lake, old Srinagar repays a full day β Jama Masjid, the Shah-i-Hamdan shrine, Nowhatta bazaar, and the river ghats are all within walking distance of each other.
2. Gulmarg β Meadow of Flowers & India’s Top Ski Resort
Gulmarg (2,650 m, 56 km from Srinagar) in summer: a sweeping meadow ringed by snow peaks with the Gondola reaching 3,980 m for views into Pakistan. In winter: India’s premier ski resort with 4β5 m of annual snowfall. Activities year-round include golf on one of the world’s highest courses, horse riding, and trekking to Alpather Lake.
3. Pahalgam β Betaab Valley, Aru Valley & Pine Forests
Pahalgam (2,130 m, 96 km from Srinagar) is the gateway to some of Kashmir’s best scenery. Betaab Valley is a wide flat meadow beside the Lidder River with deodar forests and snow peaks. Aru Valley (12 km from Pahalgam) is quieter and a base for trekking to Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake. Minimum 2 nights recommended.
4. Sonamarg β Meadow of Gold & Gateway to Ladakh
Sonamarg (2,740 m, 80 km from Srinagar on NH1) is the last major destination before the Zoji La pass into Ladakh. The Thajiwas Glacier is reached via a 3β4 km walk or pony ride. Sonamarg is also the trailhead for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Note: Sonamarg closes November to April.
5. Mughal Gardens β Nishat, Shalimar & Chashmeshahi
Three Mughal gardens sit on Dal Lake’s eastern shore, all within 10 km of each other. Nishat Bagh (built 1633, largest β 12 terraces) is best in AprilβMay. Shalimar Bagh (built 1619 by Emperor Jahangir) is the most famous. Chashmeshahi is smallest and quietest. Entry βΉ24β40 per person; combine all three in a half-day with a cab.
6. Doodhpathri β The Undiscovered Meadow
Doodhpathri (Valley of Milk, 42 km from Srinagar) is the least touristy of Kashmir’s major meadows. Streams run milky-white over limestone. Best in MayβJune for wildflowers. The 90-minute drive from Srinagar is a good full-day option to avoid Gulmarg crowds.
7. Yusmarg β The Quiet Alternative
Yusmarg (2,730 m, 47 km from Srinagar) is a small meadow with the Doodhganga River, virtually no tourist infrastructure, and views of the Pir Panjal range. Best for travellers who want a quiet half-day away from Srinagar β not a destination warranting an overnight stay.
8. Gurez Valley β For the Committed Explorer
Gurez Valley (2,400 m, 123 km from Srinagar via Bandipora) sits along the Line of Control and was closed to tourists until 2007. The Kishanganga River, Dawar village, and the Razdan Pass (3,450 m) drive are the highlights. Open MayβOctober. Requires 2β3 day side trip. Inner Line Permit required.
