Winter Kashmir Trip from Delhi 2025–26: Snow, Skiing & Complete Guide

Winter Kashmir (December–February) from Delhi is one of India’s most popular short-break trips — Srinagar is 1 hour 20 minutes from Delhi by air, and the snow-covered valley is a completely different world from the summer tourist circuit. This guide covers how to plan a winter Kashmir trip from Delhi: what to expect, when to go, what it costs, and what Gulmarg skiing involves for first-time visitors.

Delhi to Kashmir: Flights and Route

By air (recommended): Delhi (DEL) to Srinagar (SXR) is 1 hour 20 minutes. Multiple daily flights: IndiGo (4–6 daily), Air India (2–3 daily), SpiceJet (1–2 daily). Fare: ₹3,500–₹8,000 one way depending on advance booking. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for best fares; last-minute winter fares (particularly December 20 – January 7, the holiday rush) can reach ₹12,000–₹16,000 one way. Flight tip: avoid 06:00–08:00 Delhi departures in winter — Srinagar can have morning fog that delays return flights; afternoon departures (12:00–15:00) from Delhi allow same-day arrival. By road (not recommended for winter): Delhi to Srinagar overland is 800+ km via Jammu and NH-44. The Banihal Tunnel is open year-round, but winter fog and ice on NH-44 from Udhampur to Ramban makes this a 14–18 hour drive in winter conditions. Not advisable as a primary route. Rail to Jammu + road is an option for the budget conscious: Delhi–Jammu by Shatabdi (5.5 hours, ₹1,200–₹2,500) + Jammu–Srinagar road (5–6 hours, ₹700–₹1,200 by shared cab).

What Kashmir Looks Like in Winter

Srinagar in December–February is cold (-4 to 5°C in the day, -8 to -12°C at night in January). Dal Lake partially freezes in January — a rare sight that draws photographers and visitors specifically to see it. The houseboats are operational year-round; good Category A/B houseboats have central heating (bukhari — traditional Kashmiri wood-fire heater) and electric blankets. The Mughal gardens are closed (no bloom) but the snow-covered garden structures are visually striking. Old City Srinagar is fully operational — bakeries, market, mosques. Pahalgam in winter is snow-covered and accessible (the road is maintained), with a quieter, more atmospheric character than the summer tourist rush. Sonamarg road is typically closed November–April. Main winter attraction: Gulmarg — 56 km from Srinagar, India’s premier ski resort, with the Gondola operating to 3,980 m and consistent powder snow from December through March.

Gulmarg Skiing for Delhi Visitors: First-Timer’s Guide

Most Delhi visitors who go to Gulmarg in winter have never skied. This is absolutely fine — Gulmarg has an established ski school, equipment rental, and beginner slopes. What to expect: Arrive Gulmarg by 09:30 (1.5 hr drive from Srinagar). Gondola Phase 1 to Kongdori (2,650 m). Ski school registration (if learning) — instructor + equipment hire ₹2,500–₹4,000 for a half-day beginner lesson. Beginner slope sessions at Kongdori (Phase 1 level). If you are comfortable, Phase 2 Gondola to Apharwat (3,980 m) for higher slopes. Lunch at Phase 1 or Gulmarg resort. Return Srinagar by 17:00. Equipment: Skis, boots, poles, and ski suit (jacket + pants) are all rentable at Gulmarg — you do not need to bring your own. Gloves, goggles, and warm base layers should be brought from Delhi. Realistic expectations: One day of beginner ski school produces the ability to snowplow down a gentle slope. Two days produces basic linked turns. Most Delhi visitors who go for 2–3 days of skiing say it is one of the most fun experiences they’ve had — the combination of learning a new skill at a spectacular setting at 3,000 m is genuinely memorable.

Recommended 4-Night Winter Kashmir Itinerary from Delhi

Day 1 — Fly Delhi–Srinagar: Afternoon flight (12:00–14:00 from DEL). Arrive Srinagar 13:30–15:30. Transfer to heated houseboat. Evening shikara on Dal Lake — snow-covered banks, empty boats, extraordinary silence. Houseboat Wazwan dinner. Day 2 — Srinagar winter sightseeing: Morning: Mughal gardens (snow-covered, no crowds). Old City walk — wood-fired bakeries making fresh Kashmiri kangir breads and sheermal. Hazratbal Mosque. Shopping — Polo View Market for pashmina (winter is the best time to buy — sellers are motivated and prices more negotiable). Afternoon: Shankaracharya Hill drive (stairs are icy in deep winter; drive to car park and enjoy the view from there). Day 3 — Gulmarg skiing: Full day Gulmarg (depart 08:30, return 17:30). Gondola Phase 1 + ski school or Phase 2 if confident. Snow play, horse rides in snow, lunch at Gulmarg. Day 4 — Pahalgam day trip: Snow-covered Betaab Valley. Lidder River (partially frozen in January). Return Srinagar by 17:00. Final houseboat night. Day 5 — Fly Srinagar–Delhi: Morning check-out. Polo View last-minute shopping. Airport transfer. Afternoon flight home.

What to Pack for Winter Kashmir

Essential: Thermal base layers (top and bottom, merino wool or synthetic — not cotton). Heavy down jacket (rated to -10°C or lower). Warm waterproof boots (ankle height minimum). Gloves (inner liner + outer shell). Woollen hat covering ears. Neck gaiter or balaclava. For Gulmarg skiing: Ski suit (jacket + pants) can be rented in Gulmarg — no need to bring. Ski goggles (UV protection critical at 3,980 m). Bring your own gloves — rental gloves are often inadequate. Sunscreen (SPF 50+) — sun reflection off snow causes burn even in winter. General: Portable phone charger (cold drains batteries faster). Kashmiris use a kangri (fire pot carried under a cloak) — available to buy for ₹300–₹500 and genuinely keeps you warm while walking in Srinagar. We give packing guidance to every Kashmir guest before travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kashmir safe to visit in winter?

Yes. The tourist zones (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam) are fully operational in winter and safe for visitors. The main practical risk is weather disruption — Srinagar airport can close for fog (particularly mornings in December–January). We advise afternoon flights and building one flexibility day into the itinerary for winter trips. Road conditions on Gulmarg and Pahalgam highways are monitored and we adjust schedules for weather.

Will the houseboat be warm enough in January?

Category A and B houseboats have bukhari (traditional Kashmiri wood-fire heater) and/or electric heaters in guest rooms. January temperatures inside the houseboat are comfortable (15–18°C in the room) when heating is operational. The deck and outdoor areas are cold — dress accordingly for any time spent outside. We specifically vet for houseboat heating quality when recommending properties for winter bookings — not all houseboats maintain their heating systems equally.

Is February or December better for snow in Kashmir?

February is more reliable for snow and better weather overall. December is unpredictable — early December may have minimal snow while late December usually has good snow accumulation. January is peak snowfall but also peak cold (-12°C at night in Srinagar). February has reliable ski-season conditions at Gulmarg, better daytime temperatures (0 to 5°C), fewer holiday crowds, and often the best snow quality of the season. Our recommendation for first-time winter Kashmir visitors from Delhi: target the first two weeks of February.
