My wife and I got engaged on a shikara in 2018 — that is, in a small way, why this itinerary exists. Most “Kashmir honeymoon packages” you find online are travel-desk spreadsheets dressed up with stock photography. This one was built by people who actually had their honeymoon week here. The pacing, the houseboat we recommend on night one, the candle-lit dinner spot we book at Char Chinar, the cottage in Pahalgam with the wood-stove that smells of cedar — every choice has been tested by us before it landed on this page.
Why honeymoon in Kashmir between April and October
Kashmir gives couples four distinct experiences depending on the month. March-end to mid-April brings the Tulip Garden bloom — about 17 lakh tulips on the slopes of Zabarwan, with the almond orchards of Badamwari blooming pink a week earlier. May to July is the peak honeymoon window — Gulmarg’s meadows are emerald, Pahalgam’s Lidder runs fat with snowmelt, and evenings on the houseboat are 18°C, perfect for a Kashmiri wazwan dinner on the open deck. August to mid-September is monsoon-light in Kashmir (we sit in the rain shadow of the Pir Panjal), with fewer crowds and 15–20% lower hotel rates. October brings the chinar autumn — Naseem Bagh and Nishat lit up red and gold. And December–February is the snow honeymoon — see our Kashmir in Winter page for that itinerary.
Our recommended 5N/6D Kashmir honeymoon itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar, premium houseboat on Dal Lake
Our driver Manzoor picks you up at SXR with rose petals on the rear armrest and a placard with your names. 30-minute drive to the Boulevard. You board a shikara (yours alone, not shared) and glide 12 minutes across to Sukoon Houseboat — a chinar-wood deluxe on Nigeen Lake. Welcome Kahwa with crushed almonds, a slow afternoon, and at 5 PM Bashir bhai — our shikarawala for the last 12 years — takes you on a private sunset shikara across Char Chinar island. Dinner is a five-course Kashmiri wazwan: tabak maaz, gushtaba, rista, rogan josh, and a saffron firni to close.
Day 2 — Mughal Gardens, sunset shikara, candle-lit dinner
Late breakfast on the houseboat veranda. Drive 9 km to Shalimar Bagh (Jahangir’s garden for Noor Jahan — the romantic backstory matters) and Nishat Bagh terraces; ticket is ₹24 per person. Stop at Pari Mahal for the panoramic view of Dal. Afternoon free for a Kashmiri pheran shopping at Polo View — the embroidered tilla-work cardigans look beautiful in honeymoon photos. Evening: a private candle-lit dinner on the houseboat foredeck, our chef serves rice in a copper tash-naari with rose petals. We hand you the room key at midnight; the bed is decorated with marigold petals and Kahwa tea-light candles.
Day 3 — Drive to Gulmarg, Gondola Phase II ride
Check out of the houseboat after a relaxed brunch. 56 km drive to Gulmarg, just under 2 hours via Tangmarg. We pre-book your Gondola Phase II tickets (Phase I to Kongdoori, Phase II to Apharwat Peak at 3,979 m). At Phase II in May–June you’ll find pockets of fresh snow even when Srinagar is warm. Lunch at Hotel Khyber’s terrace café with a view of Apharwat. Check into The Khyber Himalayan Resort (deluxe king room) or Vintage Gulmarg for a more boutique feel. Evening: walk to St Mary’s Church in golden hour.
Day 4 — Pahalgam via Awantipora, Aru Valley pony walk
Drive 137 km from Gulmarg to Pahalgam — about 4 hours including a stop at the 1,200-year-old Awantipora temple ruins and the saffron fields of Pampore (October only). Check into The Chinar Resort in a cottage room overlooking the Lidder. Afternoon: 11 km drive up to Aru Valley with a 40-minute pony walk through pine forest to a shepherd’s tea hut at Lidderwat — our handler Tariq has been doing this route for 19 years. Dinner at the resort with a bottle of Kinnaur red on us.
Day 5 — Betaab Valley + Chandanwari, return Srinagar
Morning at Betaab Valley (named after the 1983 Sunny Deol film — the cottages in the meadow are still the same ones from the shoot), then 16 km up to Chandanwari, the Amarnath Yatra base camp. Snow patches survive here even in July. Drive back to Srinagar via Anantnag — about 3 hours. Check into Vivanta by Taj — Dal View for two nights. Evening free.
Day 6 — Old city walk + departure
If your flight is in the afternoon, we run a 2-hour walking tour of old Srinagar — Jamia Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula on the Jhelum, and a stop at the Khayam neighbourhood’s famous baker for a fresh tsot. Drop to SXR with time to spare.
What makes a Kashmir honeymoon different (the 7 small things)
- Welcome on the shikara with rose petals and Kahwa — not at a hotel desk.
- Single occupancy in a deluxe houseboat suite — not a shared “honeymoon special” room.
- Private shikara at sunset (₹1,800 each separately if you booked yourself; included with us).
- Candle-lit dinner on the foredeck — we arrange the chef, the table, and the music (a young Kashmiri rabab player if you’d like).
- Room decoration on Day 1 and again on the anniversary night if you mention a date.
- Same driver and same vehicle the whole trip — not a different cab every leg.
- A handwritten card from us with a small saffron-and-walnut gift on the last day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kashmir safe for honeymoon couples in 2026?
Yes. Tourism in Kashmir crossed 2.36 crore visitors in 2024 — the highest in three decades. Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are open and have a strong on-ground police and J&K Tourism presence. We’ve never had a safety incident with our honeymoon couples in 10 years.
Which month is best for a Kashmir honeymoon — April, June or October?
April for tulip bloom and snow on the upper Gulmarg slopes; June for full-green meadows and longest daylight; October for autumn chinar and 30% cheaper hotels with the same weather as June.
Will I get snow in Gulmarg in March, April or May?
March: yes, deep snow everywhere. April: yes, at Apharwat (Gondola Phase II, 3,979 m) and pockets in upper meadows. May: only at Phase II. After 1 June, you need to take the Gondola to Phase II to see snow.
What is the difference between a Deluxe and a Super-Deluxe houseboat?
Deluxe: chinar-wood interiors, attached bath with hot water geyser, one drawing room, en-suite breakfast. Super-Deluxe: bigger suite, four-poster bed, walnut-carved ceiling, butler service for breakfast and dinner. Heritage: J&K Tourism A-grade with private boatman, 24×7 chef.
Are vegetarian, Jain or vegan meals available on the houseboat?
Yes for vegetarian and vegan. For strict Jain (no root vegetables, no onion-garlic), we need 72 hours’ notice — we bring a separate cook who specialises in Jain wazwan-style cooking.
Can you arrange a surprise candle-light dinner and room decoration?
Yes. Standard package: rose-petal bed decor + candle dinner on Day 1 (included). Premium add-on: anniversary-style decor with name initials, balloons, cake — ₹3,500. Tell us 48 hours ahead.
How much does a Kashmir honeymoon photoshoot cost?
₹14,500 for a half-day single-location shoot; ₹26,000 for a full-day shoot across two locations (typically Dal Lake + Gulmarg). Includes 60+ edited high-res photos and a 30-second cinematic reel.
Do we need an Inner Line Permit or any e-visa for Kashmir?
Indian nationals: no permit needed for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg. For Gurez Valley a J&K Tourism permit is required (we file it for you). Foreign nationals: no permit for these four — just standard Indian visa. Gurez is currently restricted for some foreign passports — we’ll check at booking.
What clothes should we pack for a 6-day honeymoon in April or May?
April: light woollens for Srinagar (8–18°C), thermals + jacket for Gulmarg Phase II. May: light cotton for daytime, a light jacket for evenings, one warm layer for Gulmarg. Comfortable walking shoes for Mughal Gardens. Sun cream — UV at altitude burns faster than people expect.
What is your refund policy if my flight gets cancelled?
Free reschedule with no penalty for airline-side cancellations. For other cancellations: full refund 30+ days before, 50% inside 15 days, 0% inside 7 days. We can usually move dates without penalty if you give us notice.
