I grew up in Khanyar — Chillai Kalan is when we stop drinking water and start drinking nun-chai. Winter in Kashmir is not Manali snow with espressos. It is −6°C at noon, a kangri under your pheran, frost-line on the window edges of a wooden houseboat. It is one of the most beautiful things you’ll see in India. It is also the easiest trip to get wrong without a local.

A winter Kashmir trip done right looks like this: you wake up on a Heritage houseboat at 7 AM with a woodstove already lit by the caretaker, Kahwa on the tray, frost on the outside of the window but 19°C inside the carved walnut interior. You look out over a Dal Lake that may be partially iced at the edges, the Zabarwan Hills white above the treeline, the city quieter than it is in summer. By 10 AM you’re in a Crysta with snow chains heading to Gulmarg. By 3 PM you’re at 4,200 metres watching ski instructors run lines down Apharwat. This is a different trip from summer Kashmir — slower, more intimate, colder, and for the right traveller, more rewarding.

What ‘Winter in Kashmir’ Really Means — Chillai Kalan, Chillai Khurd, Chillai Bachi

Kashmiri winter is officially divided into three stages: Chillai Kalan (21 December to 30 January — 40 days of the harshest cold, pipes freeze, Dal Lake partially ices), Chillai Khurd (31 January to 19 February — 20 days of “small chilla”, the worst has passed but cold remains), and Chillai Bachi (20 February to 10 March — “baby chilla”, temperatures begin to recover). For tourists, Chillai Kalan is the peak winter experience window — and it overlaps perfectly with the ski season at Gulmarg.

When You Actually Get Snow — Srinagar vs Gulmarg vs Pahalgam

  • Srinagar (1,585 m) — Snowfall on 3–6 days in a typical winter, lying snow for 1–3 days at a time. Wettest weeks: 1st week January, last week January.
  • Gulmarg (2,650 m) — Constant snow from mid-December to mid-February. 1–2 metres of accumulated snow at base; up to 5 metres at Phase II Apharwat.
  • Pahalgam (2,200 m) — Less consistent than Gulmarg. Heavy snowfall in January, then partial thaw. Lidder River freezes at the edges by late January.
  • Sonamarg (2,800 m) — Road closes from mid-November to April. Not accessible in winter.

The Winter Houseboat Experience

Summer houseboat bookings far exceed winter, which means the winter houseboat experience is quieter, more attentive, and often significantly cheaper. A Heritage or A-category houseboat in January costs 25–40% less than the same boat in July. The boats are heated by woodstoves — cast-iron burners installed in each room that the caretaker lights before you wake. The walnut-and-deodar interiors hold heat well. The specific pleasure of winter on the Dal is the silence: the shikaras are fewer, the vegetable market at 6 AM on the water is a fraction of its summer size, and the frost on the carved woodwork at dawn is genuinely beautiful. We only book guests into houseboats that have functioning woodstoves in every room and a caretaker on premises overnight for winter stays.

Gulmarg Skiing 2026 — Gear Rental, Instructors, Levels

  • Gear rental (skis, poles, boots, helmet) — ₹1,200/day at Kongdoori base; ₹1,500/day at the Apharwat shop. We recommend Sumo Skis or Tariq Sports for trusted gear.
  • Instructor rate — ₹2,000/half-day, ₹3,500/full day. Certified by the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM).
  • Gondola tickets — Phase I (Kongdoori) ₹890, Phase II (Apharwat) ₹990. Buy online at gulmarggondola.com to avoid queues.
  • Skill levels — Green (Kongdoori bowl, beginners), Blue (Mary’s Shoulder, intermediate), Red (Apharwat back-bowl, advanced only).
  • Best week to ski — Last week of January to first week of February. Snow consolidated, fewer whiteout cancellations, peak powder conditions.

What’s Open and What’s Closed in Winter

  • Open — Srinagar (Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens in snow, Old City, Hazratbal), Gulmarg (skiing, gondola, hotels), Pahalgam main town, houseboats with woodstove heating
  • Partially open — Pahalgam town: open. Betaab Valley road: usually open. Aru Valley: closes after heavy snowfall.
  • Closed — Sonamarg (road shut November–April), Tulip Garden (closed November–March), Mughal Road to Poonch (shut December–April), Doodhpathri and Yusmarg upper meadows (snow-covered but accessible by 4×4 for snow photography)

Winter Pricing vs Summer — Rates Drop Significantly

Winter is Kashmir’s low season for hotels (the ski crowd at Gulmarg is the exception). A 3-star hotel in Srinagar that costs ₹4,500/night in July runs at ₹2,800–3,200 in January. A Heritage houseboat that is ₹7,500/night at peak tulip season drops to ₹4,500–5,000 in Chillai Kalan. Cab rates are identical year-round. Our winter packages are typically 20–30% cheaper than identical summer packages for the same accommodation standard.

Winter Packing List — Sub-Zero Specific

  • Heavy thermal innerwear (Decathlon Wedze rated to −10°C works well)
  • Wool fleece middle layer
  • Heavy down jacket rated to −10°C — non-negotiable for Gulmarg
  • Waterproof outer shell pants for snow play and skiing
  • Waterproof snow boots (Quechua or Sorel)
  • Woollen socks — 2 pairs minimum
  • Woollen cap covering ears, neck gaiter, lined gloves
  • Sunglasses with UV protection — snow glare at Gulmarg is intense
  • Heavy moisturiser and lip balm with SPF — cold and high UV combination dries skin fast
  • Hand warmers (Hot Hands disposable packs, available at Gulmarg shops but cheaper to bring from home)

Sample 5N/6D Kashmir Winter Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival and Dal Lake

SXR pickup and transfer to a Heritage houseboat with woodstove heating. Afternoon shikara on Dal Lake — if the lake edges are iced, the shikara path is through the open central channel and the view of ice-fringed banks is worth having. The caretaker has Kahwa and a kangri ready for your arrival.

Day 2 — Srinagar in Snow

Mughal Gardens in winter are spectacular — Shalimar Bagh with snow on the Chinar terraces and icicles on the fountains is genuinely different from any summer visit. Lunch at Mughal Darbar (Residency Road — the wazwan in winter is the correct form, warming and heavy). Old city walk via Khanqah-e-Moula, the Shah-e-Hamdan shrine, and the Maharaj Gunj bazaars.

Day 3 — Drive to Gulmarg

Leave by 8 AM to reach Tangmarg before the snow gate opens (usually 9 AM after BRO morning clearance). Phase I Gondola to Kongdoori, snow play at the meadow, afternoon light on the Pir Panjal from the upper station. Check into your Gulmarg hotel — the meadow hotels at Gulmarg are heated and the restaurants are warm.

Day 4 — Full Day Gulmarg Skiing

Full day Gulmarg — Phase II Gondola to Apharwat summit (4,200 m), optional skiing lesson with an IISM-certified instructor. The bowl below Apharwat is where India’s national ski training happens; watching the competitive skiers run lines while beginners practice below is entertaining in its own right. Return to the meadow for the evening light.

Day 5 — Pahalgam in Snow

Drive Srinagar to Pahalgam (3 hours). The Lidder Valley approach in winter, with the river partially iced at the banks and the deodar trees snow-covered above town, is one of the most reliably beautiful drives in Kashmir. Betaab Valley road is usually open in winter; Aru closes after heavy snowfall. Overnight at a river-adjacent hotel in Pahalgam.

Day 6 — Return to Srinagar and Departure

Drive back via the Pampore saffron fields (frosted and empty in winter, but the landscape is quiet and the road is fast). Most afternoon and evening flights from SXR operate reliably outside the December–January morning fog window; avoid early morning departures December–February when fog diversions to Jammu are more frequent.

Cab vs Train vs Flight in Winter

  • Flights to SXR — Mostly reliable, but morning fog from 15 December to 15 February occasionally diverts flights to Jammu. Book afternoon arrivals when possible.
  • Katra–Srinagar rail (USBRL) — The new Vande Bharat Express via Banihal tunnel is becoming a viable winter alternative when fog grounds flights. Check current schedules as the line is being extended.
  • Cab to Gulmarg from Srinagar — Always doable with snow chains. Our Tangmarg snow gate timing knowledge (gate opens after BRO clearance, usually 9 AM) means we never leave you stranded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gulmarg open for skiing all of January and February?

Yes — the gondola runs daily unless wind speed exceeds 70 km/h. Phase II may shut briefly during whiteout. Always plan 2 buffer days in Gulmarg for weather flexibility — this is standard advice for any ski destination.

Will the road from Srinagar to Gulmarg be open during heavy snowfall?

The Tangmarg–Gulmarg snow gate shuts during active snowfall and reopens after BRO morning clearance — usually 9–10 AM. Our cabs carry snow chains as standard equipment in winter and we never push the gate if it’s shut.

How cold does it get in Srinagar in January?

Daytime: −2 to 7°C. Night: −6 to −10°C during cold spells. Inside a well-heated houseboat or hotel: 18–22°C. Wear thermal innerwear, fleece mid-layer, and a down jacket for daytime outings and you’ll be comfortable.

Is the Tulip Garden open in February?

No — the Tulip Garden is closed from November to late March. It typically opens in the last week of March. If you want to see spring blooms, the Badamwari almond garden in Hawal peaks in late February and is open earlier.

Can I see the famous frozen Dal Lake?

Partial freezing (edges and shallower channels) happens in 5–7 out of every 10 winters. Full freeze across the main lake is rare. Best chance: third week of January during a sustained cold spell. We’ll tell you current ice conditions when you check in.

Do I need snow chains on my cab?

Only for the Srinagar–Gulmarg route during active snowfall. We carry chains in all winter vehicles at no extra charge and fit them at Tangmarg, not at the snow gate queue. For Pahalgam in winter, chains are rarely needed unless there has been heavy snowfall in the preceding 24 hours.
