Our family is from Bandipora — Gurez is where my grandfather grew up. Until 2007 this valley was on the Restricted List and Indian tourists weren’t allowed. Today it’s open, but a permit at Razdan Pass is still required and the road shuts October to May. Around 90% of visitors go for two days, see Dawar and turn around. The valley actually opens up properly only at Tulail, 35 km further. This itinerary takes you all the way.
Gurez is unlike any other Kashmir valley because the people here are not Kashmiris. The Dards of Gurez are Shina-speaking, fair-complexioned, and culturally connected to the Dard populations of Hunza and Chitral. Their wooden architecture, music (the Shina rubab), and food (wheat-based, not rice-based) are all distinct. You can spend a full day in Dawar watching a community that has lived at 8,000 feet with minimal outside contact for generations.
Permits & Registration
Indian nationals require a J&K Tourism permit filed at the Razdan Pass checkpost. We handle this 7 days ahead with your Aadhaar copy and photograph — no extra charge, no queue at the checkpost. Foreign nationals are allowed for most passports with a separate permit (14-day lead time); some nationalities are restricted and we verify at booking. We also file an Inner Line registration with the Indian Army at the Bandipora Brigade HQ. Carry original ID; the Dawar police post registers you on arrival.

Vehicle: 4×4 Only — No Exceptions
The Razdan Pass road is unmetalled in sections between Bandipora and the pass. The Tulail road has river crossings and loose-gravel stretches. We never send Innovas or Dzires to Gurez — only Scorpio-N, Thar, XUV700, or Fortuner. If another operator sends an Innova, push back. The road is genuinely demanding and the vehicle needs to be ready for it.
Best Months to Visit Gurez
| Month | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Late May – June | Meadows just greening, rivers full from snowmelt, fewer visitors, cooler nights (5–10°C) | Good — quieter, dramatic snowmelt rivers |
| July – August | Full green, wildflowers in Tulail, warmest (20–22°C days), most visitors | Best overall — peak beauty |
| September | Golden hues, fewer tourists, excellent photography light | Best month for photographers |
| Early October | Pass can shut at 48 hrs’ notice from snowfall | Risky — we check BRO forecasts before confirming |
| October–May | Razdan Pass closed | Not accessible |
Photography in Gurez
Gurez is arguably Kashmir’s best photography destination — it’s genuinely unphotographed. No stock-image views, no tourist crowds. The Kishanganga with Habba Khatoon peak at golden hour (6–7 PM in summer) is the shot most guests return with. The Razdan Pass descent at dawn — starting at 5 AM on Day 4 — gives the valley in mist with the river just visible below. Dard village architecture in Dawar and Achura is best shot in mid-morning light. Bring a wide lens for panoramas and a 50mm or short telephoto for village details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Indians need a permit to enter Gurez Valley?
Yes — a J&K Tourism permit filed at the Razdan Pass checkpost. We process it 7 days ahead with your Aadhaar copy at no extra charge. You just need to send us a scan of your Aadhaar and one passport photo.
Can foreigners visit Gurez? Are there restrictions?
Most passports are allowed with a separate 14-day-lead permit. Some nationalities are restricted — we verify at booking. Original passport must be carried and presented at all checkpoints, including the Dawar police post.
When does the Razdan Pass road open and close?
Open late May to early October. Exact dates depend on BRO snow clearance — we track this daily and confirm road status on the morning of every Gurez booking.
Is mobile network available in Dawar / Tulail?
BSNL postpaid works patchily in Dawar. Jio postpaid works in Dawar but not Tulail. Airtel and Vi: essentially no signal. We carry a satellite phone for emergencies on all Gurez tours.
Is Gurez safe? It’s close to the LoC.
Yes — Gurez has been peaceful for two decades and the army presence is reassuring rather than threatening. The LoC is 15 km north of Dawar, heavily fenced and patrolled. Our family has been visiting Gurez for generations — if it weren’t safe, we wouldn’t run tours there.
Are there hotels in Gurez or only homestays?
J&K Tourism log huts in Dawar are the closest thing to a hotel — attached bathrooms, geysers, housekeeping. No chain hotels. The accommodation is rustic but reliably comfortable. We inspect our partner properties twice a season.
