Our family is from Bandipora — Gurez is where my grandfather grew up. Until 2007 this valley was on the Restricted List and Indian tourists weren’t allowed. Today it’s open, but a permit at Razdan Pass is still required and the road shuts October to May. Around 90% of the people who visit Gurez go for two days, see Dawar and turn around. The valley actually opens up properly only at Tulail, 35 km further. This itinerary takes you all the way.

Gurez is unlike any other Kashmir valley because the people here are not Kashmiris. The Dards of Gurez are Shina-speaking, fair-complexioned, and culturally connected to the Dard populations of Hunza and Chitral in Pakistan. Their wooden architecture, their music (the Shina rubab is different from the Kashmiri version), and their food (wheat-based, not rice-based) are all distinct. You can spend a full day in Dawar just watching the daily routine of a community that has been living at 8,000 feet with minimal outside contact for generations.

Where Is Gurez and Why Almost No Indian Has Been There

Gurez is 123 km north of Srinagar in Bandipora district, across the Razdan Pass (11,672 ft / 3,560 m). The valley sits along the Kishanganga River and runs east toward the Line of Control. The road from Bandipora climbs steeply through oak and pine forest before reaching the treeline and the bare ridge of Razdan Pass — and on the other side, the valley drops away dramatically with the Kishanganga visible as a silver line 500 metres below. The drive from pass to Dawar on a clear day is one of the most beautiful descents in Kashmir.

Permits and Registration

Indian nationals require a J&K Tourism permit filed at the Razdan Pass checkpost. We handle this 7 days ahead with your Aadhaar copy and photograph — no extra charge, no queue at the checkpost. Foreign nationals are currently allowed for most passports with a separate permit (14-day lead time); some nationalities are restricted and we verify at booking. We also file an Inner Line registration with the Indian Army at the Bandipora Brigade HQ. Carry original ID; the Dawar police post registers you on arrival.

Day-by-Day 3N/4D Gurez Itinerary

Day 1 — Srinagar → Bandipora → Razdan Pass → Dawar (123 km, 6 hr)

Pickup at 7 AM. Drive via Bandipora, lunch at Tragbal (an army-run dhaba does good rajma-chawal and is usually the last reliable meal before the valley). Climb to Razdan Pass — photo stop at the top board with the Pir Panjal range visible on clear days behind you. Drop into Gurez valley, reach Dawar (the main settlement) by 4 PM. Check into a J&K Tourism log hut or partner homestay. Evening walk to the Kishanganga river bridge — the water is glacial, fast, and clear enough to see the riverbed.

Day 2 — Tulail Valley + Habba Khatoon Viewpoint

Full day drive 35 km east to Tulail valley — this is the section that most visitors never reach. Photo stop at Habba Khatoon peak, the pyramid-shaped mountain named after the 16th-century Kashmiri poetess whose legend connects this valley to the Mughal court. Cross Patalwan and Achura villages where the Dard wooden architecture is best preserved. Lunch with a local family in Sheikhpora (we arrange this 24 hours ahead at ₹600/head — a proper Dard meal of wheat flatbread, lentil soup, and fresh walnut chutney). Return to Dawar by evening.

Day 3 — Dawar Village + Shina-Dard Culture Walk

Morning at Dawar village with a local elder as guide — wooden houses built entirely without nails, the water mill (gratta) that still grinds wheat by the river, the small Shia mosque that predates the partition. Afternoon free for photography along the Kishanganga. Optional brown trout fishing with a ₹500 license and gear we provide. The Kishanganga at Dawar holds large-size brown trout; the fishing is genuine, not staged.

Day 4 — Return to Srinagar via Wular Lake

Early start — cross Razdan Pass while the road is dry and the pass board is catching morning light. Drive back via Bandipora with a 30-minute stop at Wular Lake, Asia’s largest freshwater lake (3,850 sq km, a Ramsar wetland site). The lake road from Bandipora to Sopore has fishing villages and migratory bird sightings in the autumn. Reach Srinagar by evening.

Where You’ll Sleep

  • J&K Tourism log huts (Dawar) — A-grade wooden cottages with attached bath, woodstove for warmth, 24-hr hot water from a geyser. ₹3,500/night double occupancy. Book through jktdc.co.in or we book on your behalf.
  • Partner homestays — Family-run log houses with shared bath; rustic and authentic, meals included. ₹1,800/night. The better homestays fill up fast in July–August; confirm with us early.
  • Camping in Tulail — Available in summer. Not recommended in May or early June when nights drop to 2–5°C.

Vehicle: We Send 4×4 Only

The Razdan Pass road is unmetalled in sections between Bandipora and the pass. The Tulail road has river crossings and loose-gravel stretches. We never send Innovas or Dzires to Gurez — only Scorpio-N, Thar, XUV700, or Fortuner. If you book a trip with another operator and they send an Innova, push back. The road is genuinely demanding and the vehicle needs to be ready for it.

Photography in Gurez — What to Shoot and When

Gurez is arguably Kashmir’s best photography destination because it’s genuinely unphotographed. There are no stock-image views here — you’re the first person with your particular composition. The Kishanganga with the Habba Khatoon peak in the background at golden hour (6–7 PM in summer) is the shot most guests come back with. The Razdan Pass descent at dawn — if you start at 5 AM on Day 4 — gives you the valley in mist with the river just visible below. The Dard village architecture in Dawar and Achura are best shot in mid-morning light when the grain of the wood is visible. Bring a wide lens for the valley panoramas and a 50mm or short telephoto for the village details.

Best Months to Visit Gurez

  • Razdan Pass typically opens late May, closes early October (BRO-dependent)
  • June — meadows just greening, rivers full from snowmelt, fewer visitors, cooler nights (5–10°C)
  • July–August — most beautiful month, full green, wildflowers in Tulail, warmest temperatures (20–22°C days)
  • September — golden hues, fewer tourists, excellent photography month. Best month overall.
  • Early October — risky. Snow can shut the pass at 48 hours’ notice. We check BRO forecasts before confirming any October booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Indians need a permit to enter Gurez Valley?

Yes — a J&K Tourism permit filed at the Razdan Pass checkpost. We process it 7 days ahead with your Aadhaar copy at no extra charge. You just need to send us a scan of your Aadhaar and a passport photo.

Can foreigners visit Gurez? Are there restrictions?

Most passports allowed with a separate 14-day-lead permit. Some nationalities are currently restricted — we verify at booking. Original passport must be carried and presented at all checkpoints, including the Dawar police post.

When does the Razdan Pass road open and close?

Open late May to early October. Exact dates depend on BRO snow clearance — we track this daily and confirm road status the morning of every Gurez booking.

Is mobile network available in Dawar / Tulail?

BSNL postpaid works patchily in Dawar town. Jio postpaid works in Dawar but not Tulail. Airtel and Vi: essentially no signal. We carry a satellite phone for emergencies on all Gurez tours.

Is Gurez safe? It’s close to the LoC.

Yes — Gurez has been peaceful for two decades and the army presence is reassuring rather than threatening for visitors. The LoC is 15 km north of Dawar but heavily fenced and patrolled. Tulail is the closest sensitive zone; we obey army instructions on stopping points and timing throughout the tour. Our family is from Bandipora and has been visiting Gurez for generations — if it weren’t safe, we wouldn’t run tours there.

Are there hotels in Gurez or only homestays?

J&K Tourism log huts in Dawar are the closest thing to a hotel — attached bathrooms, geysers, housekeeping. There are no chain hotels. The accommodation is rustic but reliably comfortable. We inspect our partner properties twice a season and replace any that drop below standard.
