On the Zojila switchbacks we keep tyre pressure at 28 PSI — the Crysta’s ground clearance handles it. On the Tangmarg–Gulmarg snow stretch in January we use Bridgestone Blizzak winter tyres and snow chains. The Innova Crysta is the right vehicle for Kashmir for one practical reason: it has enough power to climb a 14% gradient with 6 adults and full luggage, and enough boot space to take you, your in-laws and a week of clothes from SXR Airport to the upper meadows of Pahalgam without a single discomfort stop.

We shifted our primary fleet to the Innova Crysta in 2022 after running the older Innova for fifteen years. The decision came down to one trip: a family of six from Bengaluru, fully loaded, on the Gulmarg road in February with packed snow on the last 4 km. The old Innova made it, but the driver was working hard on the steering. The Crysta makes the same run with traction control doing the work and three-zone AC keeping the cabin at whatever temperature the grandparents prefer while the kids have the back row to themselves. That’s a meaningful upgrade on a 6-day trip, and it’s why we now run 14 Crystas and retire older platforms as they age out.

Why the Innova Crysta Is the Right Vehicle for Kashmir’s Roads

Kashmir’s terrain is not a single road type. In a single week-long trip you’ll cover four-lane national highway from Srinagar to Anantnag, the 7% gradient climb to Gulmarg, the narrow switchbacks above Sonamarg toward Zojila, and the potholed market roads through Pahalgam town. The vehicle that handles all of these without strain — not just the highway portions — needs specific attributes that the Crysta delivers on spec.

  • Ground clearance — 178 mm; clears speed-breakers in Pampore and the rough stretches on the Gulmarg approach without scraping.
  • Engine — 2.4L diesel, 150 PS / 343 Nm. Handles Zojila Pass at 11,575 ft without strain, even with full cabin load and luggage.
  • Cabin — captain-seat layout (Crysta ZX) gives the middle row two reclining seats with armrests, far more comfortable for seniors than the bench in older Innovas — especially on the 4-hour Srinagar–Pahalgam run.
  • Boot — 300 L with all seats up; 480 L with the last row folded. Handles 5–6 large suitcases on a 6-day trip.
  • Climate — three-zone climate control, useful when a family has very different temperature preferences across the front, middle, and rear rows.

Sample 6-Day Innova Crysta Itinerary for a Family of 5

Day 1 — Srinagar Arrival

Your driver meets you at SXR Airport with a name board, loads the luggage, and transfers you to your houseboat on Nigeen Lake. The 25-km drive from the airport takes 40 minutes. We prefer Nigeen to the main Dal Boulevard for first nights — quieter, less tourist-vendor pressure, and the shikara-men who appear at the front deck are calmer. Your 90-minute evening shikara ride covers the main lake channels with the Zabarwan hills going golden above the water.

Day 2 — Srinagar Sightseeing

Mughal Gardens in sequence — Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi — then the Tulip Garden in April (Asia’s largest, ₹50 entry, not included in cab fare but worth every rupee). Afternoon at Polo View for the better pashmina and dry fruit shops, or the old city lanes around Maharaj Gunj if you’d rather walk. The driver positions the Crysta at each garden entrance and moves with you — no walking 400 m to the car park.

Day 3 — Gulmarg

The 52-km drive from Srinagar takes 2 hours, climbing through Tangmarg into the Pir Panjal foothills. The Gondola Phase I ticket covers Gulmarg meadow to Kongdoori Station (2,600 m) — in summer this is meadow and Himalayan views; in winter it’s the base for Apharwat ski runs. Phase II (Apharwat summit, 4,200 m) is an optional add-on at ₹990 per person if weather is clear. The Crysta parks at the gondola base and waits — no shared cab coordination needed from the road junction.

Day 4 — Drive to Pahalgam via Pampore

The Pampore saffron stop adds 20 minutes to the route and is worth it — the fields are farmed at road level and in October the purple flowers are visible from the highway. Pahalgam is 95 km from Srinagar, roughly 3 hours in the Crysta. The Lidder River comes into view just before town — check into your hotel on the riverbank and let the water do the work for the afternoon.

Day 5 — Aru, Betaab Valley, Chandanwari

The three upper valleys above Pahalgam are reached by shared local cabs (₹300–500 per person, not included) since the narrow roads above town restrict large vehicles. The Crysta stays at Pahalgam while you do the valley run in local jeeps — this is standard practice and smooth. Aru Valley is the trailhead for the Tarsar Marsar trek and the quieter of the three; Betaab Valley is the wide Lidder bowl made famous by Bollywood shoots; Chandanwari is the Amarnath Yatra starting point with glacier remnants in July and August.

Day 6 — Sonamarg and Return to Srinagar

The 87-km Pahalgam–Sonamarg route via Srinagar takes about 4.5 hours total. The Crysta handles the full drive including the Sonamarg approach road. Thajiwas Glacier is a 3-km pony ride or walk from the parking area (local ponies at ₹400 return, not included). After Sonamarg, the 80-km return to Srinagar and airport drop takes 2 hours — comfortably done before evening flights.

All-inclusive Crysta and driver for 6 days: ₹26,500. Hotels, food, and activity fees are separate — or take our full family tour package at ₹81,000 for a family of 5, which includes hotels and breakfast throughout.

Crysta vs Old-Gen Innova vs Scorpio-N — Which to Choose

The choice depends on your group size, route, and whether you have seniors or young children who need the comfort difference on long drives.

  • Old-gen Innova — Cheaper (₹3,800/day), bench middle row, slightly less plush. Fine for short routes, younger groups, and budget-conscious travellers on a 2–3 day itinerary where cabin comfort matters less.
  • Innova Crysta — Captain seats in the middle row, more refined engine on mountain roads, better for 5+ day itineraries with seniors, children in car seats, or families where motion sickness is a concern. This is our default recommendation for a 6-day Kashmir circuit.
  • Scorpio-N / XUV700 — Higher ground clearance (200 mm+), better suited for Gurez Valley, Sinthan Top, and Mughal Road where the last stretch turns to gravel. Less smooth on the long Srinagar–Pahalgam highway run compared to the Crysta. Choose this if your itinerary includes a genuinely off-road destination.

Frequently Asked Questions — Innova Crysta in Kashmir

How many people can fit in an Innova Crysta with luggage?

6 adults plus driver, with 4–5 medium suitcases in the boot. With 7 adults, the last row is fine for short transfers but becomes tight on a 6-day trip with full luggage — for groups of 7 or more, a Tempo Traveller 12-seater is the cleaner solution at ₹6,500/day.

Is the Innova Crysta automatic or manual? Diesel or petrol?

Our entire Crysta fleet is diesel — both manual and automatic variants. Automatic is preferred for Kashmir’s mountain switchbacks and we recommend requesting it at booking (no extra charge). If you specifically want manual, we can accommodate that too.

Can the Crysta go to Gulmarg in January when there’s heavy snow?

Yes, with snow chains fitted. The Tangmarg–Gulmarg snow gate opens after morning road clearance by BRO — usually around 9 AM. Our drivers know the timing, carry the chains, and fit them before the final climb rather than at the snow gate queue. We’ve run this route every January for the past decade without a stranding.

How old are your Innova Crysta vehicles?

Oldest 2022, newest 2025. All vehicles are under 80,000 km on the odometer. Each gets a full service at Toyota Hyderpora every 5,000 km, and we inspect brakes, tyres, and chains before every mountain route booking. We retire vehicles at 120,000 km regardless of condition — not because they fail, but because mountain-road wear on suspension and brakes is cumulative in ways that aren’t always visible until they matter.

Can an Innova Crysta do the Srinagar to Leh road?

Yes — the Crysta handles the Srinagar–Leh highway including Zojila Pass (11,575 ft) and the high passes on the Leh side. It is not a 4×4 and is not the best vehicle for rough off-road deviations, but the NH1 Srinagar–Leh road is a maintained tarmac highway and the Crysta manages it comfortably. The 3-day/2-night one-way transfer is ₹26,000 fully inclusive. For groups who want the comfort of a Crysta but need true 4×4 capability for side routes, we can arrange a Fortuner at ₹13,500/day.
