Nubra Valley: Ladakh’s Most Magical Hidden World
Nubra Valley is the place in India that most surprises first-time visitors. Sitting at just 3,100m β significantly lower than Leh’s 3,524m β this hidden valley hidden behind Khardung La (one of the world’s highest motorable passes at 5,359m) is an improbable paradise: green villages, blooming wild roses, double-humped Bactrian camels loping across sand dunes, Buddhist monasteries glowing golden at sunset, and the confluence of two turquoise rivers. The contrast to Leh’s stark plateau is breathtaking.
Despite being only ~120km from Leh, most Ladakh visitors spend just a single rushed night in Nubra and barely scratch its surface. A proper Nubra tour package (2β3 nights) reveals an entirely different dimension: the ancient Balti culture of Turtuk village (accessible only since 2010), the steaming Panamik hot springs, the dramatic Shyok River gorge, and starscapes so clear that your phone’s night mode can barely keep up.
Top Places to Visit in Nubra Valley
π« Hunder Sand Dunes & Bactrian Camel Safari
The most iconic image of Nubra β double-humped Bactrian camels (a relic of the ancient Silk Road caravans) against a backdrop of towering sand dunes and snow-capped Karakoram peaks. The dunes are at their most photogenic in the golden hour before sunset or just after sunrise. Camel safari rides: βΉ300ββΉ500 for 20 minutes. Best combined with a stay at Hunder village’s camp cluster.
π Diskit Monastery & 32-Metre Maitreya Buddha
The largest and oldest monastery in Nubra, Diskit Gompa dates to the 14th century and houses the famous 32-metre white Maitreya (Future Buddha) statue. The statue gazes towards the Siachen Glacier on the Pakistan border, a deliberately symbolic positioning. The monastery complex offers stunning valley views and authentic Tibetan Buddhist prayer hall interiors. Photography of the statue is best at sunrise when the Karakoram backdrop glows pink.
ποΈ Turtuk Village β India’s Last Baltistan Outpost
Opened to civilian visitors only in 2010, Turtuk is the northernmost village accessible to Indian tourists β less than 10km from Pakistan-controlled territory. Its culture is uniquely Balti (Tibeto-Iranian fusion), its people are Shia Muslim (unlike most of Buddhist Ladakh), and its apricot orchards and walnut groves are the most productive in the region. Walking its narrow stone-paved lanes past traditional mud-brick houses feels like stepping into Central Asia. The 90km drive from Diskit via the Shyok valley is itself a highlight.
β¨οΈ Panamik Hot Springs
Located at the northern end of the valley near the Line of Actual Control, Panamik’s natural geothermal springs are among Ladakh’s best-kept secrets. The sulphur-rich water (reportedly therapeutic for skin and joints) emerges at approximately 45Β°C. There are basic public pools and a slightly more comfortable private pool facility. Best visited in the morning when the springs have overnight heat. Entry: βΉ50ββΉ100.

Getting to Nubra Valley: The Khardung La Route
All road access to Nubra Valley is via Khardung La pass (5,359m), approximately 39km north of Leh. The road is operational from late May to late October, weather permitting. The drive from Leh to Hunder (the main tourist cluster) takes approximately 4β5 hours including a stop at the pass. The Khardung La summit itself is an iconic photo stop β most visitors buy the “I Conquered Khardung La” certificate from the BRO stall β but altitude caution is important: spend no more than 20β30 minutes at the pass, move on quickly.
Permits for Nubra Valley
Indian nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Nubra Valley. The permit is issued by the Leh District Magistrate’s office (online: lahdc.nic.in) and costs βΉ20 per day per person. It must be obtained before crossing Khardung La. Travel My Country handles all permit logistics for guests on our packages β you simply provide photocopies of ID proof at the time of booking and we do the rest. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) arranged through the DM office β typically processed in 1β2 days.
