Kashmir Itinerary 7 Days 2026: The Complete Day-by-Day Guide

A 7 day Kashmir itinerary is the ideal choice if you want to go beyond the standard highlights and experience the valley at a slower, more rewarding pace. Seven days lets you add Doodhpathri (the “Valley of Milk,” still largely untouched by mass tourism), spend an extra evening wandering Srinagar’s old city, and wake up on a houseboat without immediately rushing to the next destination. This is the itinerary we recommend most to couples and families who travel Kashmir once and want to do it properly.

7 Day Kashmir Itinerary — Day by Day

Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar | Dal Lake | Mughal Gardens

Arrive Srinagar Airport (SXR). Transfer to your houseboat. Take a 1-hour Shikara ride — spend it drifting past the flower sellers, the bread boats, and the painted wooden bridges of the old lake neighbourhood. Later, visit Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh. First dinner on the houseboat. Overnight: Houseboat, Dal Lake.

Day 2 — Old Srinagar City: Mosques, Markets & Crafts

Dedicate Day 2 entirely to Srinagar’s old city — a side of Kashmir most 4-day tourists miss. Start at Jama Masjid (one of India’s finest wooden mosques, 378 wooden pillars, built 1402 AD). Walk through Nowhatta bazaar — the wholesale market for Kashmiri spices, dried fruits, and local bread. Visit Shah-i-Hamdan (Khanqah), the 14th-century wooden shrine on the Jhelum riverbank. Cross the old Zaina Kadal bridge. End the afternoon at Shankaracharya Temple for a panoramic sunset over Dal Lake. Overnight: Houseboat, Dal Lake.

Day 3 — Gulmarg: Gondola & Meadows

Drive to Gulmarg (50 km, 1.5 hrs). Ride the Gondola Phase 1 to Kongdoori. For altitude lovers: continue on Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak (3,980 m) — on clear days you can see Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), the world’s ninth-highest mountain. Walk through the meadow. In winter: skiing and sledging; in summer: wildflower hiking. Return to Srinagar by evening. Overnight: Hotel, Srinagar.

Day 4 — Doodhpathri: The Hidden Valley

Doodhpathri (“Valley of Milk,” 2,730 m) is 42 km west of Srinagar — about 1.5 hrs. The name comes from the milky-white streams that flow through its alpine meadows. Unlike Gulmarg or Pahalgam, Doodhpathri sees a fraction of the tourist traffic, which means you get the landscape almost to yourself. Walk along the stream, have a picnic, or hire a pony for a meadow ride. Return to Srinagar. This day is the buffer that makes a 7-day trip feel like a real holiday rather than a sprint. Overnight: Hotel, Srinagar.

Day 5 — Pahalgam: Betaab Valley, Aru & Chandanwari

Drive to Pahalgam (95 km, ~2.5 hrs). The Lidder valley unfolds as you gain altitude. Take a local union jeep (mandatory for inner valleys) to cover Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, and Chandanwari (2,895 m, the gateway to Amarnath). Each valley has its own character — Betaab is cinematic and open, Aru is forested and intimate, Chandanwari is raw mountain. Return to your Pahalgam hotel for the night. Overnight: Hotel, Pahalgam.

Day 6 — Sonmarg: Thajiwas Glacier & Sindh Valley Drive

Drive back toward Srinagar but continue 80 km northeast to Sonmarg (2,730 m). The road follows the Sindh River through one of Kashmir’s most photogenic gorges. At Sonmarg, hire a pony (₹400–700) or walk 30 minutes to Thajiwas Glacier. In winter, the glacier and surrounding snowfields are a playground; in summer, the meadow is green with grazing sheep and wildflowers. Return to Srinagar. Overnight: Hotel, Srinagar.

Day 7 — Hazratbal | Shopping | Departure

Morning visit to Hazratbal Shrine — the most revered Muslim shrine in Kashmir, on the northern shore of Dal Lake, with a stunning white marble façade. Then: final shopping in the bazaars. Saffron (buy from certified shops or cooperatives), Kashmiri walnuts, hand-knotted carpet showrooms on Boulevard Road, pashmina (ask to see the Pashmina Mark certificate). Transfer to airport. Tour ends.

Add-Ons Worth Considering

Gurez Valley day trip (add to Day 4 or as extension): 2.5 hrs north of Srinagar near the Line of Control — one of Kashmir’s most isolated and dramatic valleys. Requires Inner Line Permit (₹150/person, arranged by your operator). Yusmarg: A quieter meadow 47 km south of Srinagar — best for families with small children who want horse rides in a crowd-free setting. Wular Lake: Asia’s largest freshwater lake, 50 km from Srinagar — combines well with a Sopore or Bandipora sightseeing detour.

💡 Packing Tip for 7 Days: Carry layers regardless of season. Srinagar at 1,585 m can be warm during the day but cool at night. Gulmarg and Sonmarg at 2,600+ m can be 10°C cooler than the valley floor even in June. A light down jacket, sunscreen (UV is intense at altitude), and waterproof shoes cover 95% of conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days too long for Kashmir?

Not at all. Most travellers who do 7 days say they wished they had 10. The difference between a 5-day and 7-day trip is that you stop rushing and actually absorb the place. Days 2 and 4 in this itinerary (Old City and Doodhpathri) are what separate a tour from a real experience.

Can I do this itinerary in winter?

Mostly yes. Gulmarg and Dal Lake are actually more magical in winter. Swap Sonmarg (road typically closes November–April) with an extended Gulmarg day or a Yusmarg visit. Doodhpathri is accessible in winter but gets heavy snowfall — check with your operator.

What is the best base for a 7-day trip?

Srinagar for 5 of the 7 nights is ideal. Staying one night in Pahalgam (Day 5) breaks the long Day 5→Day 6 road day and lets you experience Pahalgam in the quiet evening after day-trippers leave — the Lidder River sounds, the pine smell, the lack of noise. Worth the extra hotel booking.
