Most visitors to Kashmir hear about Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Far fewer hear about Yusmarg — and that is precisely the point. This high-altitude meadow in the Budgam district, 47 kilometres southwest of Srinagar, offers the same pine forests, open grassland, and mountain backdrop that make Gulmarg famous — without the crowds, the queues, or the prices. A day trip to Yusmarg from Srinagar is one of the most underrated experiences in the Kashmir Valley, and one we recommend consistently to guests who want space, quiet, and natural beauty without a packed itinerary.

What is Yusmarg?
The name Yusmarg is sometimes translated as “Meadow of Jesus” — a reference to a local legend that connects the valley to the travels of Isa (Jesus) through Central Asia. Whether or not you find that legend compelling, the valley itself is undeniably special. It sits in a natural bowl at 2,350 metres, surrounded on three sides by dense conifer forest and open to the south with views towards the Pir Panjal range. A shallow stream runs through the meadow, and in spring and early summer the entire floor is covered with wildflowers.
Unlike Gulmarg, there is no gondola, no ski resort, and no permanent tourist strip. What there is: open space, clean air, horses for hire, a few basic food stalls serving Kashmiri tea and bread, and a trail system that lets you walk for hours without meeting another tourist.
What to Do in Yusmarg
Nilnag Lake Trek (2–3 hours return)
The most popular walk from Yusmarg leads to Nilnag Lake — a small, high-altitude lake about 5 km from the meadow floor. The trail climbs steadily through forest and emerges at the lake, which sits in a shallow depression surrounded by peaks. It is a straightforward walk requiring no technical skill — just good walking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness. The view from the lake back over the Yusmarg meadow and towards the valley beyond is excellent. Allow 2–3 hours for the round trip at a comfortable pace.
Horse Riding
Local horsemen operate from the meadow and offer pony rides across the grassland and into the surrounding forest. This is particularly popular with families and children and is an unhurried, affordable way to cover more ground without the exertion of a long walk. Rates are negotiated directly with the horsemen at the meadow.
Forest Walks and Photography
The conifer forest surrounding Yusmarg is among the most pristine in the valley. Self-guided walks through the tree cover take you into complete quiet — no traffic, no development, just old fir and pine in thick stands. The light filtering through the canopy on a clear morning is excellent for photography. Birdlife in the forest is also notable — warblers, flycatchers, and woodpeckers are common.
Picnic and Rest at the Meadow
One of Yusmarg’s most genuine pleasures is simply being there. Bring a packed lunch (we can arrange it), find a spot at the stream, and spend the afternoon in the kind of quiet that is now genuinely rare. Many of our guests report this as the most memorable part of their Kashmir trip — not a Gondola ride or a famous lake, but an afternoon sitting by a mountain stream in a meadow that most tourists have never heard of.
How to Reach Yusmarg from Srinagar
The route from Srinagar to Yusmarg passes through Budgam district via Charar-e-Sharief — a significant Sufi shrine and pilgrimage site that is worth a brief stop if time allows. The road is well-maintained until the last 10 km, which is a narrower mountain road that is perfectly passable in a standard sedan but more comfortable in an SUV. The total drive is approximately 1.5 hours from central Srinagar.
Our day trip package includes cab service from your Srinagar hotel or houseboat and back. We use a Dzire or Swift for groups of up to 4; for larger groups we can provide a larger vehicle at adjusted pricing. Book at ₹3,000 per cab — this is an all-day rate with no hidden per-km charges.
Best Time to Visit Yusmarg
- April–May: Spring wildflowers in full bloom. The meadow is at its most colourful. Temperatures are cool and pleasant (8–18°C). Highly recommended.
- June–August: Full summer. The meadow is deeply green. Occasional afternoon showers but generally clear mornings. The busiest period, though still much less crowded than Gulmarg.
- September–October: Autumn. The forest turns golden and the light is exceptional. Arguably the most beautiful time to visit. Temperatures drop after sunset so bring a jacket.
- November–March: Snow covers the meadow and the road can be icy. We do not operate Yusmarg day trips in winter — access is unreliable and the experience is cold without the ski infrastructure that makes Gulmarg viable in winter.
Combining Yusmarg with Other Destinations
Yusmarg is typically done as a standalone day trip from Srinagar. It works well as a rest day between more strenuous activities — the gentle pace and low altitude (relative to Gulmarg) make it ideal for a day when you want to be outdoors without a demanding itinerary. It can also be combined with a visit to Charar-e-Sharief shrine on the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions — Yusmarg Day Trip
Is Yusmarg better than Gulmarg?
They serve different purposes. Gulmarg is for the Gondola, skiing, and a high-altitude adventure experience. Yusmarg is for peace, nature walks, and escaping the tourist circuit. If you want to ride a cable car to 4,200 metres, go to Gulmarg. If you want a meadow to yourself, go to Yusmarg. Many of our guests visit both on the same Kashmir trip.
Is Yusmarg suitable for children and elderly visitors?
Yes — it is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Kashmir. The meadow is flat and easily walkable, the altitude is manageable (2,350m), and the horse rides are gentle and enjoyed by children of all ages. Elderly visitors who might struggle with the altitude at Gulmarg’s Phase 2 (4,200m) will be perfectly comfortable at Yusmarg.
Is accommodation available at Yusmarg?
There are a few basic guesthouses in the village near the meadow. For an overnight stay, this can be a very peaceful experience — particularly in the early morning before day visitors arrive. Ask us to arrange an overnight Yusmarg stay as part of a custom itinerary.
