Best Hotels in Srinagar 2026: Houseboats, Dal-View Hotels & City Stays

Written by the Travel My Kashmir team — We have placed 4,000+ guests in Srinagar hotels and houseboats since 2012. We inspect properties personally and update our preferred lists every season. This guide reflects what we actually book, not sponsored placements. Updated May 2026.

Best Hotels in Srinagar 2026: Houseboats, Dal-View Hotels & City Stays

Srinagar has more variety in accommodation than any other destination in Kashmir — from category A houseboats on Dal Lake to international-standard city hotels to simple guesthouses near the old city. Choosing correctly makes a significant difference to your experience. A bad houseboat (damp, poorly maintained, aggressive commission-seeking behaviour) will colour an entire trip negatively. A good one will be among the most memorable stays of your life. We have stayed in and reviewed dozens of properties over 12+ years. Here is our honest breakdown by category.

Category A Houseboats on Dal Lake

Dal Lake houseboats are divided into categories by the J&K Tourism Department (Category A, B, C, D, and Deluxe). Category A and Deluxe represent the finest — carved deodar cedar interiors, proper bathrooms, well-maintained decks, competent kitchen staff, and no unsolicited “shopping shikara” interruptions. The key markers of a genuine category A houseboat: ceiling woodwork that is carved, not printed; a private deck with a table; a proper sit-down Western toilet; and a boat boy who respects when you do not want visitors.

Properties we work with regularly in the Deluxe/Category A tier include houseboats on the Boulevard (western shore, most convenient for sightseeing), the Nagin Lake cluster (quieter, less traffic, slightly further from the Boulevard market), and the Nehru Park area (central location, best morning light on the mountains). Rates vary by season: ₹4,000–₹8,000 per night per houseboat in shoulder season; ₹8,000–₹18,000 in peak May–June. A houseboat typically sleeps 2–4 guests. We do not publish specific houseboat names publicly because availability and ownership change — contact us for our current verified shortlist for your dates.

Dal-View Hotels on the Boulevard

The Boulevard (Maulana Azad Road) runs along the western shore of Dal Lake and is Srinagar’s main tourist hotel strip. Several properties here offer genuine Dal Lake views from their rooms and are the most practical base for sightseeing — close to the main shikara ghats, walking distance to Polo View Market, and well-served by taxis. These properties have more consistent facilities than houseboats (more reliable hot water, WiFi, room service) while still giving you the lake setting.

The Lalit Grand Palace (formerly the palace of the Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir) is Srinagar’s most storied property — a 5-star hotel in a heritage building with Mughal gardens of its own, indoor pool, and extraordinary architecture. It is on the Boulevard and a 10-minute walk to the main shikara ghats. Rates ₹15,000–₹30,000/night in peak season. Vivanta Dal View (Taj) is a strong 4-star option with reliable international standards and a lake-facing restaurant. Hotel Dar Es Salaam and Hotel Alps Grand are well-regarded mid-tier options (₹4,000–₹8,000/night) with clean rooms, lake views, and helpful staff — these are among the most-booked properties in our packages for guests who want good value without sacrificing location.

City-Centre Hotels (Lal Chowk / Residency Road Area)

Srinagar’s commercial core around Lal Chowk and Residency Road has a cluster of business-grade hotels that are well-located for shopping and the old city but without lake views. These suit business travellers, groups on tight budgets, or guests visiting family in the city. Hotel Broadway and Hotel Leeward are the most consistent mid-range options in this area — clean, well-run, and significantly cheaper than Boulevard properties (₹2,500–₹4,500/night). The disadvantage is the 15–20 minute drive to the shikara ghats. We use these properties for groups where cost efficiency is the priority over setting.

Nagin Lake: The Quieter Alternative

Nagin Lake (connected to Dal’s north-western corner) is significantly less trafficked than the main Dal. Houseboats here have less shikara-vendor interruption and the setting is arguably more serene. Several of our honeymooning guests specifically request Nagin over the Boulevard segment of Dal for this reason. The trade-off is a slightly longer drive to the Mughal gardens (10 minutes extra). Properties on Nagin include some of the finest independently-operated houseboats in Srinagar — clean, family-run, and with genuine hospitality.

What to Watch Out For

Srinagar’s houseboat market has a well-documented problem with touts and commission-based referrals. If you book independently, you may find the houseboat owner pushing you toward shops and services from which he earns commission — “my cousin’s pashmina shop”, “my brother-in-law’s saffron stall.” This is a persistent pattern. Our packages explicitly exclude commission-referral behaviour from all partnered properties, and we brief guests in advance. The second issue is category misrepresentation — properties listed online as “Category A” may not have been inspected or recertified recently. We have seen Category B properties list themselves as A on OTA platforms. We inspect all properties personally or through trusted local contacts before placing guests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stay on a houseboat or in a hotel in Srinagar?

Both, if you have 2+ nights. We typically book 1–2 nights on a category A houseboat and the remaining nights in a Boulevard hotel. This gives you the houseboat experience (which is irreplaceable) while avoiding the practical limitations of houseboat stays for longer periods (less storage space, variable hot water pressure, distance from restaurants for those who want to dine out). For guests who are particularly focused on the lake experience, all nights on the houseboat is also a valid choice.

Are Srinagar hotels safe for solo female travellers?

Yes. The Boulevard hotels, Nagin Lake houseboats, and Lalit Grand Palace all have professional reception staff and 24-hour security. We have placed hundreds of solo female guests in Srinagar properties without issue. We advise all guests (regardless of gender) to book through a vetted operator for their first Kashmir visit rather than booking independently through unverified OTA listings.

Is there WiFi on Dal Lake houseboats?

Most category A and B houseboats now offer WiFi. The signal strength and reliability varies — it is typically adequate for messaging and email but not for video calls or streaming. If reliable high-speed internet is critical (for remote work, for example), a Boulevard hotel will serve you better. Mobile data (Jio, Airtel) also works in the houseboat area, though speeds vary.
