Best Time to Visit Gulmarg 2026: Month-by-Month Season Guide

Gulmarg is one of the few Indian hill destinations that is genuinely worth visiting in any season — the experience changes completely between winter and summer, and both are outstanding in their own right. The question is not whether to go, but which version of Gulmarg you want: snow and skiing, or alpine meadow and wildflowers. This guide gives you an honest month-by-month breakdown based on what we observe operating Gulmarg trips every week of the year.

January–February: Peak Winter / Best Skiing

January and February are Gulmarg’s peak ski season — the Gondola Phase 2 slopes at Apharwat (3,980 m) carry consistent powder snow, and the ski resort infrastructure (ski rentals, instructors, ski school) is fully operational. Average temperatures: -10°C at night, -2 to 2°C in the day. The Gondola operates weather-permitting — clear days are spectacular, but cloud and snowfall can close Phase 2 for 2–3 days at a stretch. Who it’s for: Skiers and snowboarders (beginner to intermediate slopes; there is no extreme off-piste infrastructure). Snow experience seekers who want snowfall, snowman-building, horse rides in snow, and the aesthetic of a snow-covered meadow. Who should avoid it: Elderly travellers, families with young children who can’t handle below-zero temperatures, those on tight schedules who can’t absorb weather delays. Booking note: January–February Gulmarg hotels book out 8–10 weeks in advance. The ski season is the most demand-constrained period for Gulmarg accommodation.

March–April: Shoulder Winter / Spring Transition

March is still ski season (snow reliable through mid-March most years). April sees the snow line retreat from Gulmarg meadow (2,650 m) while Apharwat above remains snow-covered. The valley floor becomes green in April — the contrast of green meadow against snow peaks is one of the most striking landscape compositions in Kashmir. April is also almond and cherry blossom season in the Srinagar valley — if combining with a Srinagar trip, April is exceptional. Temperatures are comfortable (5–15°C in Gulmarg in April). Crowds are moderate — the ski rush has ended and the summer peak hasn’t begun. Verdict: Underrated. March–April is excellent value and the landscape transition is unique.

May–June: Peak Summer / Meadow Green

May and June are peak tourist season for Gulmarg. The meadow is vivid green, wildflowers are in bloom (buttercups, forget-me-nots), and temperatures are ideal (10–20°C). The Gondola Phase 2 carries snow through May at Apharwat — so you can have green meadow at Phase 1 and snow at Phase 2 on the same day. This is the most popular combination and produces Gulmarg’s signature “green and white” photographs. Crowds: May–June is the busiest period — Gondola queues can reach 90–120 minutes at peak times (10:00–13:00). Book Gondola tickets in advance online to skip the queue (Jammu Kashmir Cable Car Corporation website). Accommodation: Book 8+ weeks ahead for June. Properties fill completely in June. Verdict: Best overall experience for most travellers — weather, landscape, and activity range are all at their peak.

July–August: Monsoon Adjacent / Still Viable

Kashmir’s monsoon influence is lighter than the rest of India — the valley is partially protected by the Pir Panjal range. July and August bring some rain (particularly afternoon showers), but Gulmarg is rarely rained out for full days. The meadow is intensely green and the wildflowers are at maximum bloom in July. The downside: some cloud cover, periodic afternoon rain, and lower clarity for mountain views. Gondola Phase 2 operates weather-permitting — clear mornings usually allow the ride. Crowds: July–August sees domestic tourist peaks (school holidays, Indian summer travel). Gulmarg can feel crowded on weekends. Verdict: Viable but not ideal. If July–August are your only option, go — Gulmarg is still worthwhile. Just set expectations for some rain and lower mountain clarity.

September–October: Best Overall / Our Top Recommendation

September and October are our consistent recommendation for the best overall Gulmarg (and Kashmir) experience. The monsoon ends in September, leaving exceptional atmospheric clarity. October brings the first dusting of high-altitude snow on Apharwat while the meadow remains accessible — another spectacular contrast. Chinar trees in Srinagar turn gold in October, making this the finest month for the combined Srinagar + Gulmarg trip. Temperatures are cool but comfortable (5–18°C). Crowds are significantly lower than May–June. Gondola operates reliably. Verdict: The best month to visit Gulmarg for most travellers — particularly October. Book 4–6 weeks ahead; less pressure than peak summer but quality properties still fill.

November–December: Pre-Season Snow / Quiet

November is a quiet, transitional month — the tourist season has ended, the first snows arrive at Apharwat and then descend to Gulmarg meadow in late November/early December. It is a beautiful, undervisited month — very few tourists, pristine early snow, and accommodation at significant discounts. The ski lifts are not yet operational (ski season typically opens mid-December after adequate snowfall). December brings proper ski season conditions by mid-month most years — the Gondola Phase 2 resumes and the ski resort opens. Verdict: November is for adventurous travellers who want solitude and landscape without activities. December (mid-onwards) is for ski season beginners who want to avoid the peak January–February crowds.

Practical Notes: Gondola and Accommodation

Gondola Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdori): ₹740–₹800 adult. Operates most days year-round. Gondola Phase 2 (Kongdori to Apharwat, 3,980 m): ₹900–₹1,050 adult. Subject to weather closure — particularly in monsoon and during heavy snowfall. Book online at jkgondola.in in advance during May–June to avoid queues. Accommodation in Gulmarg: Hotel Highlands Park (category leader, consistent quality), Hotel Yemberzal, JKTDC Gondola Hotel (government, good value). Most accommodation is on the lower meadow (2,650 m) within walking distance of the Gondola base. In ski season, some accommodation is within 200 m of the ski slopes. Getting there: Gulmarg is 56 km from Srinagar (1.5 hrs by private cab, ₹2,500–₹3,500 for a day trip). Shared taxis from Srinagar Tourist Reception Centre run at approximately ₹250–₹350/seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ski in Gulmarg without prior experience?

Yes — Gulmarg has a ski school with certified instructors and beginner slopes at Phase 1 (Kongdori). Equipment rental (skis, boots, poles) is available at the Phase 1 station. A beginner lesson package (2–3 hours with instructor + equipment) runs approximately ₹2,500–₹4,000. The beginner slopes are gentle and well-maintained during ski season. Most of our Gulmarg ski guests have never skied before — it is a genuinely accessible introduction to skiing.

Is Gulmarg safe for families with children?

Yes — Gulmarg is one of the most family-friendly mountain destinations in India. The meadow is flat enough for children to walk, horse rides are available for young children, the Gondola Phase 1 is suitable for all ages, and the snow play in winter is a major draw for families. For Phase 2 (3,980 m altitude), children under 5 are generally not recommended due to altitude. May–June and September–October are the best months for families with children.

How many days should I spend in Gulmarg?

One full day is the standard for most visitors — Gondola Phase 1 + 2, meadow time, lunch, return Srinagar. Two days works well if you want to ski (ski school requires at least 2 sessions to be worthwhile) or if you want to stay overnight for the sunrise and early morning light. Three or more days is for dedicated skiers or those doing the Apharwat trekking route. We include Gulmarg as a day trip in most 5–6 night Kashmir itineraries and as a 2-night stay for ski-focused packages.
