6 Nights 7 Days Kashmir Itinerary, Day-by-Day Guide

Written by the Travel My Country team — We have designed and operated 6-night Kashmir itineraries since 2012 — this is our most-booked duration. The sequence below reflects 400+ itinerary executions and what actually works on the ground. Updated May 2026.

Six nights is the sweet spot for Kashmir. It is long enough to cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg without feeling rushed — and short enough that most travellers can take the time off work. The 6N/7D Kashmir itinerary is our single most-booked duration. This guide presents the day-by-day sequence we have refined across 400+ itinerary executions — what to do, where to stay, and the logistics that make it flow.

Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar: Dal Lake First Evening

Arrive Srinagar (SXR). Transfer to your houseboat or Boulevard hotel — 25–35 minutes from airport depending on traffic. Check-in, freshen up. Late afternoon shikara on Dal Lake — the light between 16:00 and 18:30 is exceptional. Sunset from the water or from the houseboat deck. Dinner at the houseboat (included in Category A/B houseboat packages) or at a Boulevard restaurant. Sleep on the lake. Accommodation: Category A houseboat (premium) or 4-star Boulevard hotel. Don’t miss: The evening shikara is the best first-evening activity in Kashmir — better than any restaurant or sightseeing.

Day 2 — Srinagar: Mughal Gardens + Old City

Full day Srinagar. Morning: Nishat Bagh (built 1633, 12 terraced levels rising from Dal Lake) and Shalimar Bagh (built 1619, Jahangir’s garden for Nur Jahan) — both open from 07:00. Visit at opening time to beat tour buses. Chashme Shahi (smaller, quieter, higher elevation — better mountain views). Afternoon: Old City — Jama Masjid Srinagar (built 1402, one of the finest examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture in Asia, exterior walk), Nowhatta market area, Shah-i-Hamdan Shrine exterior (the finest example of Kashmiri wooden architecture, papier-mâché decorations). Shankaracharya Temple at sunset — 243 steps, views over the entire valley. Lunch: Mughal Darbar on Residency Road — order Rogan Josh and Tabak Maaz. Evening: Polo View Market for initial shopping reconnaissance. Dinner on houseboat or at Ahdoos.

Day 3 — Gulmarg: Gondola + Snow/Meadow

Depart Srinagar by 08:00. Drive to Gulmarg (56 km, 1.5 hrs). Arrive for the first Gondola batch. Gondola Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdori, 2,650 m) + Phase 2 (Kongdori to Apharwat, 3,980 m). Phase 2 ticket (₹900–₹1,050 adult) is worth purchasing — the views from Apharwat Peak over the Pir Panjal range are among the finest in the western Himalayas. In winter (December–March): skiing on the Phase 2 slopes. In summer (May–September): high-altitude meadow walk from Apharwat, wildflower photography. Lunch at Gulmarg resort (Hotel Highlands Park has a reliable kitchen). Return Srinagar by 17:30. Note: Gulmarg is a day trip from Srinagar — no overnight required unless you specifically want a ski-resort experience.

Day 4 — Pahalgam: Betaab Valley + Aru

Depart Srinagar by 08:30. Drive to Pahalgam (96 km, 2.5 hrs via NH-44 and valley road). Betaab Valley (10 km from Pahalgam town) — river meadow, pine forest, Bollywood filming location. Local taxi entry is mandatory from Pahalgam towards Betaab (private vehicles not permitted beyond a checkpoint). Aru Valley (12 km from Pahalgam) — quieter, more authentic, better mountain views than Betaab. Horse rides are available for Baisaran meadow (3 km from Pahalgam, no vehicles) — ₹400–₹600 per horse round trip. Overnight in Pahalgam (not a day trip — the drive time means a day trip is too rushed). Pahalgam accommodation: Hotel Pine Palace, Hotel Woodstock, or Pahalgam Hotel (government-run, river views, excellent value).

Day 5 — Pahalgam to Srinagar + Floating Market

Early morning (optional, highly recommended): if you stayed overnight in Pahalgam, walk the Lidder River bank at 06:30 before check-out — the light on the Pahalgam pine slopes at dawn is extraordinary and the crowds are absent. Depart Pahalgam by 09:00. Return to Srinagar (arrive ~11:30). Afternoon free — use it for houseboat relaxation, Polo View Market shopping (pashmina, saffron, walnut crafts), or a Srinagar city food walk. If you haven’t done the Dal floating vegetable market yet: arrange a 05:30 shikara for Day 6 morning instead. Evening: Group Wazwan dinner if travelling with family/friends — pre-book at Mughal Darbar or ask your hotel to arrange.

Day 6 — Sonamarg Day Trip

Sonamarg (87 km from Srinagar, 2.5 hrs) is the “Meadow of Gold” at 2,800 m — the last major Kashmir valley destination before the Zoji La pass into Ladakh. The drive through the Sindh valley (river gorge, deodars, snow peaks) is itself spectacular. At Sonamarg: the Thajiwas Glacier is accessible by horse or on foot (4 km return). In winter, Sonamarg is snow-covered and the drive is occasionally subject to pass conditions — check before departure. In summer (June–September), Sonamarg meadow is green and the light clear. Important note: Sonamarg town area (shops, parking) is accessible to private vehicles; the Thajiwas glacier approach requires a local pony or walking. Return Srinagar by 17:30. Final evening — last houseboat night, packing.

Day 7 — Departure Srinagar

Check-out. If flight is afternoon, morning is available for the Dal floating market shikara (05:30–07:30) — one of the best experiences in Kashmir and often missed because guests schedule it too late. Or: a final Polo View Market run for last-minute saffron or shawls. Transfer to Srinagar airport. Flight note: Book SXR departures after 13:00 if possible for Day 7 — morning delays from valley fog (October–February) can affect earlier departures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6 nights enough for Kashmir?

Yes — 6 nights is our recommended standard duration. It covers all four major destinations (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg) without rushing. Guests who do 4 nights typically feel they missed something; guests who do 6 nights consistently say they had enough time. 7–8 nights adds Gurez Valley or a slower pace at each location — worthwhile for repeat visitors or those who want deeper off-beat exploration.

Can we add Ladakh to this 6N itinerary?

Yes — extend to 10–12 nights total. The cleanest route: 6 nights Kashmir (above) + 4–5 nights Ladakh (fly Srinagar to Leh, or road via Sonamarg and Kargil if road is open). Leh acclimatisation requires 1–2 rest days on arrival, so the Ladakh portion needs at least 4 nights to see Nubra and Pangong. We design Kashmir + Ladakh combination packages regularly — request a quote with your preferred total duration.

What is the best month for a 6N Kashmir trip?

May–June for green meadows and tulip season (tulips peak in April). September–October for clear skies, golden chinar trees, and fewer crowds than peak summer. December–January for snow and Gulmarg skiing. March–April for almond blossom and first spring green. Each month offers something distinct — we advise on the specific conditions for your target dates when you request a quote.
