Flying into Leh directly means an unavoidable Day 1 rest day for altitude acclimatisation (most people feel unwell by evening on the day of direct arrival, no matter how fit they are). The Srinagar route gives you 3 nights of gradual altitude gain — you arrive in Leh having already driven through 2,676m Kargil, and your body is ready. The 2-day highway drive covers ground that is as spectacular as the destinations themselves: Zoji La, Drass, Mulbekh, Lamayuru, Alchi, Magnetic Hill, Sangam.
8-Day Leh Ladakh Package with Flights: Full Itinerary
Day 1 — Fly to Srinagar · Dal Lake
Morning flight to SXR from your city. Houseboat check-in on Dal Lake. Shikara ride, dinner. Altitude: 1,585m.
Day 2 — Srinagar Sightseeing
Mughal Gardens (Shalimar, Nishat), Jama Masjid, Old City. Optional Gulmarg day trip if you want to combine. Evening on the lake. Altitude: 1,585m. Your body is quietly adapting.
Day 3 — Srinagar → Kargil (204 km, 6 hrs)
Early start (7 AM). Zoji La pass, Drass Valley, Mulbekh Buddha carving. Arrive Kargil by 2 PM. Altitude: 2,676m. Afternoon rest, light walk in Kargil town. Overnight guesthouse.
Day 4 — Kargil → Leh (230 km, 5 hrs)
Lamayuru monastery (11th century), Alchi, Magnetic Hill, Sangam (Indus-Zanskar confluence). Arrive Leh by 2 PM. REST. Do not go sightseeing. Altitude: 3,524m. Drink water. Eat light.
Day 5 — Leh Local Sightseeing
Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, main bazaar — all on foot, no altitude stress. Body is acclimatised by now. This is when you feel the full impact of the landscape: the Indus Valley, the bare mountains, the clarity of the sky at 3,500m.
Day 6 — Nubra Valley via Khardung La (5,359m)
ILP permit (we arrange). Khardung La, Diskit Monastery, Hunder sand dunes and Bactrian camels. Overnight in Nubra — one of the great wild camping experiences in India.
Day 7 — Pangong Tso (4,225m)
Via Shyok route or Chang La. Pangong Lake stretches 134 km — the colour gradations from turquoise near the shore to deep cobalt in the centre are unlike any water colour you have seen at sea level. Overnight tent camp on the shore.
Day 8 — Pangong → Leh · Fly Home
Early departure (5 AM) from Pangong — 4-hour drive to Leh. Morning in Leh market. Afternoon flight IXL → Delhi/Mumbai. Land same evening.

Is it better to fly to Leh or go by road?
For a first-time Ladakh visit, road is better — specifically the Srinagar–Leh highway via Kargil. You see landscapes that flying over misses entirely (Zoji La, Drass, Lamayuru, the Indus Valley approach). You acclimatise gradually. And the drive itself is part of the experience, not dead time. Flying out of Leh at the end is different — that’s purely practical, avoiding the backtrack.
Can I book the Leh Ladakh circuit without going via Srinagar?
Yes — fly DEL–IXL directly (90 minutes), spend 2 full rest days in Leh acclimatising, then do Nubra and Pangong. This works and is popular for those with less time. The cost is slightly lower (one fewer flight segment), but you miss the highway drive and the early acclimatisation is less thorough. We can build either version.
Do flights from Leh get cancelled frequently?
IXL is a mountain airport — weather-related delays and occasional cancellations do happen, particularly in late October when fog and snow begin. In peak season (June–September) cancellations are rare.
