Mumbai to Leh Ladakh is a journey between two extremes — sea level and 3,524 metres, 35°C humidity and thin mountain air, maximum density and vast emptiness. No Indian city is further in feel from Leh than Mumbai, which makes the trip all the more extraordinary for Mumbaikars. We operate this route for Mumbai guests and we know exactly what the journey demands.
How to Reach Leh from Mumbai
Option A: Fly Mumbai Direct to Leh
IndiGo and Air India operate BOM–IXL with one stop (typically Delhi). Total travel time is 4–5 hours including layover. Fares range from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000 one way. This is the fastest route but carries altitude risk — you go from sea level to 3,524m in one day with minimal acclimatisation. Mandatory Day 1 rest in Leh is essential. Diamox 250mg started 48 hours before arrival is advisable — consult your doctor.
Option B: Mumbai → Srinagar → Leh by Road (Recommended)
Fly Mumbai to Srinagar (2 hrs 45 min, non-stop), spend 2 nights in Srinagar at 1,585m acclimatising, then drive the 434km Srinagar–Leh highway over 2 days via Kargil. This is our strongly preferred routing for Mumbai guests — it gives your body three altitude steps (Mumbai 14m → Srinagar 1,585m → Kargil 2,676m → Leh 3,524m) rather than one brutal jump, and you drive one of the world’s great mountain highways as part of the journey rather than missing it entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is altitude sickness more of a risk for Mumbai residents?
Yes — sea-level residents have no altitude pre-adaptation at all, unlike someone from Dehradun or Shimla. This is exactly why we route Mumbai guests via Srinagar rather than flying direct to Leh. The 2-night Srinagar stop at 1,585m is not a formality — it is real acclimatisation that prevents the headaches and nausea that ruin the first day in Leh for those who fly direct.
What is the best month for a Mumbai to Ladakh trip?
June to September is the Ladakh window — the Srinagar–Leh highway is open, Nubra and Pangong are accessible, and the weather is stable. July–August has occasional road blockages from monsoon rain in the Kargil section; June and September are cleaner. For Mumbai travellers, June is particularly good — you escape the pre-monsoon Mumbai humidity and arrive in Ladakh’s best weather.
