Naranag Gangbal Trek 2026 — 4D/3N Kashmir’s Holy Lakes @ ₹11,500

Naranag Gangbal Trek, Kashmir
Written by the Travel My Country team — 50 km from Srinagar via Ganderbal · Twin alpine lakes below Mt Haramukh · 8th-century temple start point · Season Jun–Oct

The Naranag Gangbal trek is Kashmir’s ideal short highland route — 4 days and 3 nights, accessible to fit beginners, and culminating at twin alpine lakes (Gangbal and Nundkol) set directly below the imposing north face of Mount Haramukh (5,143 m). The trek starts from the ancient ruins of Naranag, a 8th-century Hindu temple complex in the Wangath Valley, and climbs through forests and high meadows to a campsite that feels like it exists at the edge of the world. If you have limited time in Kashmir but want a genuine high-altitude wilderness experience, this is the route.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Srinagar to Naranag (Drive) + Trek to Shokipora (3–4 hours)

We drive from Srinagar to Naranag (approximately 1.5 hours) in the morning. Before starting the trek, take time to visit the Naranag Temple ruins — a cluster of 8th-century Shiva temples built in the Kashmiri stone temple architectural style. These are among the most significant archaeological sites in the valley and are rarely visited by tourists. The trek begins at the temple complex and ascends through dense conifer forest on a well-maintained trail. Shokipora, the first campsite, sits at around 2,800 metres in a clearing overlooking the Wangath Valley. Overnight in camp.

Day 2 — Shokipora to Gangbal Lake (Trek: ~10 km, 6–7 hours)

Today is the most demanding day — a sustained climb through alpine meadows and boulder fields as the treeline gives way to open high-altitude terrain. The last 2 km before Gangbal is a steep boulder scramble that requires care and good footwear. Then the lake appears: Gangbal Lake, the largest alpine lake in the Kashmir Himalayas, lying at 3,750 metres in a massive natural amphitheatre formed by the walls of Mount Haramukh. The scale of the landscape here is difficult to convey — the lake is vast, the surrounding peaks are enormous, and the silence is complete except for wind and the occasional call of a high-altitude bird. Overnight at Gangbal camp.

Day 3 — Gangbal to Nundkol Lake and Rest Day at Gangbal

A shorter, gentler day. The morning is spent walking to Nundkol Lake, Gangbal’s smaller, greener twin — about 1.5 km across the moraine. The two lakes sit at slightly different altitudes and have completely different characters: Gangbal is wide and still and dark blue; Nundkol is smaller, shallower, and reflects a vivid green in certain light. Afternoon back at Gangbal for rest, photography, and acclimatisation. This day is one of the most appreciated on the route — time to simply sit with the landscape without needing to be anywhere. Overnight at Gangbal.

Day 4 — Gangbal to Naranag (Trek: ~12 km, 5–6 hours) + Drive to Srinagar

The descent retraces the ascent route, which feels completely different going downhill — the views open up in new ways and the pace is faster. Arrival in Naranag by early afternoon, drive back to Srinagar arriving by late afternoon or early evening.

Why the Naranag Gangbal Trek Stands Out

Most Kashmir treks that reach alpine lakes require 5–7 days. Naranag Gangbal delivers the same high-altitude wilderness experience in 4 days, making it the most time-efficient serious trek in the valley. The route also has two features that the longer treks lack: the historical anchor of the Naranag temples at the start, and the drama of camping directly beneath Mount Haramukh — one of the most sacred peaks in Kashmir and one of the most visually imposing.

The trek is also significantly less crowded than the Tarsar Marsar or Great Lakes routes. Gangbal Lake is known among serious trekkers but does not appear on most mainstream tour operator itineraries, which means you will typically share the campsite with only a few other groups.

Fitness and Preparation

The trek is classified as moderate. The ascent to Gangbal on Day 2 involves a 1,000-metre altitude gain in a single day, which requires a reasonable base level of cardiovascular fitness. Walking regularly (5+ km, 3+ times per week) for 4–6 weeks before the trek is the best preparation. The boulder scramble near Gangbal requires care but no technical skill — just sure footing.

Frequently Asked Questions — Naranag Gangbal Trek

Is Naranag Gangbal suitable for beginners?

Yes, for fit beginners. The 4-day format means the body has time to adapt to altitude without being pushed too hard for too long. We have taken many first-time trekkers on this route successfully. The key is arriving in Kashmir with at least 1–2 days of acclimatisation at Srinagar altitude (1,600m) before starting the trek.

What makes Gangbal Lake different from other Kashmir lakes?

Gangbal is the largest alpine lake in the Kashmir Himalayas — not the most famous (that is Dal Lake) but the most impressive in terms of scale and altitude. The setting directly beneath Haramukh’s north face gives it a sense of drama that the more popular Tarsar and Vishansar lakes lack. It is also a sacred lake for Kashmiri Pandits, who make a pilgrimage here in August.

Can the trek be combined with a broader Kashmir itinerary?

Yes — and we recommend it. Naranag is 50 km from Srinagar and the trek is 4 days, so it fits neatly into a 7–8 day Kashmir itinerary: 2 days Srinagar, 4 days trekking, 1–2 days Gulmarg or Pahalgam. We can build a complete Kashmir package combining the trek with sightseeing for any group size.
